apothecarium the renaissance of evil - premium edition

Completely unplayable. Screen goes from black to picture 5-20 times a second in full-screen mode, no matter what settings for video are selected, and no matter what overrides you do in drivers. or operating system. (Different operating system or videocard or driver has no effect). However, window-mode is possible, and it doesn't flicker then! Too bad the window is too small to actually find the objects asked for,,.. Foul forces are at work when a plague ravages the generic town of Somewhere. It's up to the order of the Apothecaries to track down the source of these foul humors and put a stop to them, the only way they know how. Hidden Object Puzzles. The individual elements of the game are competently made but they refinement in the connective tissues leaving players to lean on the hint system to avoid large amounts of trial and error combining objects searching for the next progression point. While at other times puzzles can be solved by near accident bypassing the setup leaving the success feeling hollow due to their being no drive to complete the puzzle.. Problems with item detection, translation errors in italian, boring and/or annoying puzzles. Random crashes to desktop. Not recommended.. One of the most beautiful games of the genre I've played. There was one part that did not seem self-explanatory (got through it anyway) and I have managed to complete all but one of the puzzles with top marks. This is the only hidden object game I have played that gives you an alternative minigame to play instead! I would not pay the full price (having completed almost the entire game in five and a half hours) but I am an incurable cheapskate and make no bones about it. This game is fun, enjoyable and not unfairly difficult as some other hidden-object games have proven to be. The graphics are beautiful and other than a few 1px thick gaps, flawless. New to and veterans alike should get a kick out of this! I did experience one crash and one black screen where I had to quit and come back in, but other than that, I experienced no technical issues.. I love HOGs, but I'm not sure if I will finish this game. (For me, that's like saying I'm not sure I'm going to finish a book; it's almost sacrilegious.) It is a cool looking game, but I'm spending as much time b*tching at it as I am playing it. The HOGs are having some issues such as: not recognizing the correct item (try clicking several times and around the item), bad naming ("clutch" is apparently a C-clamp), and multiples of a named item in a scene, but only one is correct. Some of the puzzles so far are intuitive. Some, I have no idea WTH I'm suppsed to do. NO instructions on the puzzles, even in Casual mode with tutorials open (because I thought maybe I missed something). I really dislike having to look at a strategy guide, not to SOLVE a puzzle, but just to figure out what you are supposed to do. Also, the having an appropriate tool in your inventory that will work, but it's not the "right" tool, is irritating. So, I will put it aside for now and play something else. Maybe I'll come back to it. IDK.. Bad HO game. The biggest pro are the graphics. They are well made and colourful. But the praise ends there. - Some typical naming errors commonly seen when non-English developers use English terms - Shape changing items in HO scenes are a stupid idea. Especially when the search list calls for one item, but you have to click on the changed one. - Shape-chaning items have a different font colour. OK, but items in a close-up screen are also in the same colour. Bad choice. - Hitboxes of items are off several times. - Several game crashes. - Tetris puzzle boring after a while. And at one point the game doesn't let you freely place the tiles anymore. One tile suddenly snapped only into some of the places. - Most the puzzles are badly made and really badly explained. They are either really easy or boring to solve. - Really bad visualization of where you can go and where exists are. - Map needs extra click to get to and isn't well made. - And while the story isn't really that necessary, I didn't feel like I have any clue what is going on. - At one point you have 2 or 3 hammers in your inventory and you have to smash a glass window. Well, of course, you need to use the stone you also have, because who would use a hammer to smash glass, right? OTOH there are multiple use items like the lighter. But then again you have to cut thread wit scissors and your knife doesn't work. - Multiple fitting items in HO scenes. You need to find a scroll in a scene. Well, you need to click the small one, not the big scroll. - In one case a HO item was hidden behind another. There was no indication that you had to click the item to reveal the HO item. So, overall a good looking game that fails at almost everything that makes a good HO game.. I would recommend it IF, IF. IF THE FULLSCREEN WORKED PROPERLY. Like, I turn the game on and it's auto fullscreen, the game is flickering black every 1 second and I can't see the screen. Tried to record with Smart Pixel, and guess what, when I play the recording in the editor the screen isn't flickering AT ALL. Seriously. Put the game in windowed mode, worked fine. I suppose I should be glad I have a 15" computer screen. Even then, the puzzles are difficult to solve in window mode. Also there's this bug where I click a object in one of the hidden object scenes and it doesn't recognize my click until I click some very specific spot. It crashed like 5 times when I finished a puzzle. The story is alright but I wish there was a Map button instead of hiding it in the Notes section. I have to click Notes then Maps every single time I want to use the maps which is frustrating and annoying. Also, the areas highlighted in the maps are hard to click in windowed mode. Not sure if it's easier in fullscreen but I tried to finish the game. Oh, and I have almost all the trophies except one that is the running symbol. No idea what it's called or how to get it. Can't even click to find out how to attain it. Conclusion: I finished the game in 5 hrs but it was exhausting to continuously refer back to the notes for the map. I would not recommend the game if you have a tiny laptop screen; dislike windowed mode/squinting your eyes.. It's a standard HOG. It's not that bad but I wouldn't buy it at full price. Pick it up on sale.. I've played way worse, and certainly less beautifully made games. For me it didn't crash, which I think is one of the main reasons for the negative reviews. The has its faults, several mis-described items among them, but overall I enjoyed it. The music is gorgeous for example. The puzzles have a few nice twists, like the switch to match-three in the HOG puzzles. The match-three could have been made more fun (it's not enough to match, you have to push spyglasses to the bottom), but it's a nice touch. A more novel twist, during the HOG games there are several items that will morph from one item to another (completely unrelated) - you have to find and click a specific form! The story was nice, although as usual with these games, it was a bit confused. The drawback of not being linear and not forcing the player to revisit every room countless times (you still have to revisit them). My main gripe with the game would be the click-area of the items - in at least one instance I had to click several times, even calling a hint to be sure, until it finally registered that I indeed clicked the correct item. In other times, the clickable area was almost cut off from the screen. Still, all in all it's a nice timewaster. I've done worse with my time, including playing games that had higher ratings.. Ok, I really thought about what to write about it. When I first saw the game, I just thought, how amazing it looked like. This old scenes and the town called apothecarium. But I was so screwed up. The scene is the only thing that lookes good and only in the beginning. Later the story becomes so weird, that it destroys the scene. Moving is just. well. even I made once a game with java scipt in which moving looked like this. And my teacher gave me a 5 or an E, depends on in which country you are. For people, who want to sell a game, it is worse. I don't expect much moving in a HOG but this little bit should work. So, unfortunately, I have to say, I can't recommend this game.
