Agent 007 and the Japanese secret service ninja force must find and stop the true culprit of a series of spacejackings before nuclear war is provoked.
In 1967 the US and Soviet Russia reach a new crisis when Jupiter 16, a US space capsule, is captured in Earth orbit by a strange rocket ship. The US accuses the Soviets of the space hijacking, even though Great Britain believes the alien ship landed in the Sea Of Japan. Her Majesty's Secret Service now swings into action by "killing" James Bond in Hong Kong - a ruse so Bond can move about Japan unmolested by his enemies. Working with, and enjoying the exotic hospitality of, Japanese SIS and its commander "Tiger" Tanaka, James uncovers evidence that a major chemical company is smuggling liquid oxygen for rocket fuel, and his and Tanaka's investigation leads to an extinct volcano that is the source of the space hijacking - just as a Soviet spacecraft is grabbed by the alien rocket and a previously scheduled US launch is pushed upward with America's strategic forces on full battle alert, forcing James and Tanaka to confront the true source of the space hijackings - SPECTRE, and its ruthless leader Ernst Stavro Blofeld.
You Only Live Twice (1967)

** 1/2 (out of 4)

Fifth entry in the franchise is certainly a step up from THUNDERBALL but there are still way too many problems preventing it from being completely entertaining. This time out Russia and the United States are about to go to war after someone steals their space shuttles and each side blames the other. James Bond (Sean Connery) is in Japan where he learns that his #1 enemy Ernst Starro Blofeld (Donald Pleasence) has something to do with it. There are some very good moments in this film but sadly the screenplay by Roald Dahl is a real head-scratcher because it really seems like he didn't want any action and what we do get is rather forced. The perfect example of this is when M shows up to highlight his latest creation, which is a hand built helicopter. Normally these inventions would work their way into the story but not here because we get a lazy sequence where after the introduction we're shown Bond going up in this creation and coming under attack by four real helicopters. This entire sequence just has lazy written all over it. Another minor problem is that this entry certainly starts to take a turn towards the comic book style including a far-fetched story that doesn't contain any real drama. The political tensions between Russia and the U.S. never materializes so the countdown ending just doesn't contain suspense. With that said, there are some good touches to be found here with one of the biggest is that the action takes place in Japan. It's obvious that the producers wasted no expenses because the film looks every bit its high budget. We get some beautiful sets and the location shots look extremely good. Another major plus is the one great action sequence where a car is chasing Bond and his woman only to have a helicopter with a magnet show up and take the car away. This was yet another far-fetched situation but it contains a certain amount of charm. It should come as no surprise that Connery is yet again at the top of his game and he's obviously very comfortable in the role and has made it his own by this time. He has the perfect talk and the walk to really sell the role no matter how much it seems like a boy's fantasy. Tetsuro Tamba is very good as Bond's helper and Akika Wakabayashi and Mie Hama are good as the love interests. Pleasence is very good in his role but it's a sham that the screenplay keeps him in the background for the majority of the running time. Dahl's screenplay, at times, seems to forget that this is a Bond movie as there are way too many moments where nothing interesting is going on. It's a real shame because there's a lot here that could have added up to a good movie but in the end we're left with one that mildly entertaining if very flawed. The last Connery Bond of the sixties must be one of the most gloriously rich and entertaining films of the decade. So be warned if your're looking for reality or substance, this is high calibre cinematic escapism only! With You Only Live Twice the film makers provide an adventure that outdoes all past Bond movies in terms of scale. While Roald Dahl's script follows the Bond template with great locations, characters and gadgets to enjoy, the concept of an arch villain in a hollowed out volcano trying to create World War 3 is the tour de force here. Bond has to find the hide out and stop the plan, and enlists the Japanese secret service for help along the way. The work of three Oscar winners is standout: Freddie Young's cinematography creates the requisite Bond atmosphere; Ken Adam's production design is nothing like anyone had seen at the time and composer John Barry's score is literally music to the ears. Enjoy Sean Connery in fine form as Bond. Strictly to be appreciated in widescreen only and via the biggest screen you can get your eyes on.
Roald Dahl's implausible script is padded out with the usual exotic locations, stunts, and trickery.
After the U.S. space capsule Jupiter 16 is swallowed up by a mysterious spacecraft, a diplomatic nightmare develops that might lead to a war between the United States and the U.S.S.R., whom the U.S. suspects is behind the attack. However, the British government was able to track the spacecraft's landing to the Sea of Japan and doubts that Russia was involved. In order to avert a world war, James Bond (Sean Connery) is given a new identity and sent to Japan where he joins forces with Japanese agents "Tiger" Tanaka (Tetsurô Tanba) and Kissy Suzuki (Mie Hama) in an attempt to find out who is actually behind the theft. You Only Live Twice is the fifth movie in the Bond franchise and the fifth to star Sean Connery as James Bond 007. It was preceded by Dr. No (1962) (1962), From Russia with Love (1963) (1963), Goldfinger (1964) (1964), and Thunderball (1965) (1965). You Only Live Twice is sung by American singer Nancy Sinatra. Unlike most Bond movies, James does not do a lot of globetrotting in You Only Live Twice. In the precredit opener, he is "murdered" while in Hong Kong, and his body is buried at sea. It's all a ruse, however, so that he can go undercover in order to learn who is hijacking both American and Soviet space capsules. Since they have radar evidence that the hijacking rocket landed in the Sea of Japan, Bond is sent to Tokyo to make contact with the local MI6 operative, Dikko Henderson (Charles Gray), and Japanese secret service leader "Tiger" Tanaka. Tanaka sends Bond to the docks in Kobe to look over the Ning-po, where he learns that Osato Chemicals is about to ship a large supply of LOX (liquid oxygen) to Shanghai, China. After learning that SPECTRE is behind the hijackings and may be operating from the small island of Matsu, located somewhere between Kobe and Shanghai, Bond has his appearance altered to make him look Japanese, and he is sent to Matsu where he is "married" to Kissy Suzuki, a local girl who is also a Japanese secret service operative. It becomes their job to more closely investigate the island. SPECTRE stands for "The SPecial Executive for Counterintelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion." SPECTRE is an international terrorist organization run by Ernst Stavro Blofeld (Donald Pleasence). Its members are recruited from the Gestapo, Smersh, the Mafia, and the Union Corse among others. Blofeld hijacks an American space capsule, for which the Americans blame the Soviets. He then hijacks a Soviet space capsule, for which the Soviets blame the Americans. Finally, he intends to hijack another American space capsule, only this time, he will blow up the capsule, along with his own rocket, leading the Americans to believe that the Soviets have retaliated. After the Americans and the Soviet annihilate each other in the war that will surely follow, another country will step forward as the new world power. This other country is unnamed, but two of its agents are seen talking with Blofeld and are presumed to be Chinese. They have supplied SPECTRE with equipment ("I compliment you on your equipment." says Blofeld) and are paying SPECTRE to use it ("I compliment you on the way you handle it." the agent replies). Blofeld asks for $100 million in gold (dollars presumably being worthless after WWIII) in advance, despite agreeing that SPECTRE would only get paid after war broke out. When Bond finally gets to meet Blofeld face-to-face, Blofeld says that he thought Bond had been assassinated in Hong Kong. Bond replies, "Yes. This is my second life," to which Blofeld replies, "You only live twice, Mr Bond." The reference is to a haiku from the novel (chapter 11): "You only live twice, once when you are born, and once when you look death in the face". Aki (Akiko Wakabayashi) was driving a white Toyota 2000GT. This car was never produced in a convertible version; two faux convertibles (there was no convertible top) were built specifically for the film. This is a goof. James Bond prefers his vodka martinis shaken, not stirred. During the audio commentary, director Lewis Gilbert admits that it was a error by actor Charles Gray (Henderson). Since he didn't notice the slip up until later, they just went with the original shot, making it appear to knowledgeable Bond fans that Bond was just being hospitable when he accepted the vodka martini (stirred, not shaken) from Mr Henderson. Bond stabs the man with his own knife. This is a reference to a scene in the book where a masked man who has been following Bond is tackled by a Japanese police officer and accidentally stabs himself with his knife. Adding -san to the end of a person's name is a sign of respect in Japanese. It is much like using "Mister" in English. If your name is Richard Harris, for example, you might be referred to as "Harris-san." Not what, but who. Little Nellie's father is Q (Desmond Llewelyn), because he is the one who "created" her. After Bond learns that the volcano has a false bottom, concealing SPECTRE's underground operation, he sends Kissy to fetch Tanaka, while he climbs down into the rocket base. There, he learns that SPECTRE intends to hijack an American spacecraft in two hours. He finds and releases the astronauts captured in the two previous hijackings. They knock out a few guards, don their uniforms, then help Bond steal a spacesuit. When the SPECTRE astronauts are summoned, Bond goes with them, but Blofeld notices him taking his air conditioning unit inside the capsule and has him stopped. As Bond watches, SPECTRE's rocket is launched. Shortly thereafter, Tanaka, Kissy, and dozens of ninjas descend into the crater. Blofeld's in-crater guns open fire on the ninjas. Using an exploding cigarettes, Bond shoots one of Blofeld's men, creating a diversion just long enough to open the crater, allowing the ninjas to invade by sliding down ropes. Blofeld attempts to close the crater, but a ninja places a bomb on the crater door and blows a permanent hole in it. More ninjas come streaming in. Blofeld seals off his control room, assuring Bond that nothing can stop the interception of the space capsule. When he finally realizes that he has been bested again, Blofeld first shoots Mr Osato (Teru Shimada) for failing him, then escapes on his personal monorail. With just six minutes left until interception, Bond fights his way back to the control room in order to push the abort button. Hans (Ronald Rich), Blofeld's bodyguard, tries to stop him, but Bond manages to feed Hans to the pirhanas and blow up the SPECTRE rocket with just five seconds to spare. In his escape, Blofeld also sets off charges, and the entire rocket base starts to explode, sending everyone running and swimming to get out. Air force planes drop life rafts, and Kissy and Bond climb into one. Thinking that they're all alone, they start kissing. In the final scene, their life raft is suddenly lifted out of the water when M (Bernard Lee)'s submarine surfaces under them. The novel has an almost different story. Bond is so distraught over Tracy's death (in On Her Majesty's Secret Service) that he has botched several missions. In response, M transfers him to the diplomatic department and assigns him a new number, "7777." Bond is sent to Japan to ask the head of the Secret Service there, "Tiger" Tanaka, for some secret Russian documents. In compliance with handing them over, Tanaka asks Bond to kill a Swiss botanist named Dr. Guntram Shatterhand. Shatterhand has ownership of a castle on an island in Kyushu filled with various poisonous flora and animals, piranha pools, and fumorles. Various depressed Japanese people are traveling to the island to commit suicide. Aki, Mr.Osato, Hans, Helga Brandt, and Ling are not in the novel. Henderson is a brash, hard-drinking Australian. He does not die. Shatterhand turns out to be Blofeld. He and Irma Bunt have been living on the island for a few months. Bond meets "Kissy" Suzuki on a nearby island. The two do not marry. Bond, disguised as a deaf Japanese man, infiltrates the island. Once inside the castle, Bond gets close to Blofeld's room but trips an alarm. Blofeld suspects Bond and sits him on a chair over a fumarole. With its eruption imminent, Bond drops the act and Blofeld attacks him with a samurai sword. Bond knocks Irma out and strangles Blofeld to death. He then closes the geyser and escapes with a balloon. The castle explodes under him and a piece of debris hits him in the head where he had previously sustained an injury. Bond then falls into the ocean but Kissy rescues him. Bond now has amnesia and Kissy doesn't remind him of anything so she can keep him to herself. The outside world declares Bond dead and Bond and Kissy become lovers. Bond eventually finds a slip of paper with a clue to his real life on it reading "Vladivostok". As per her father's wishes, Kissy does not deter him. As Bond makes plans to travel to Russia, Kissy wonders when she should tell him that she is pregnant with his child. Including You Only Live Twice, Connery made seven movies in which he played James Bond: Dr. No (1962) (1962), From Russia with Love (1963) (1963), Goldfinger (1964) (1964), Thunderball (1965) (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), Diamonds Are Forever (1971) (1971), and Never Say Never Again (1983) (1983). We never see on screen but presumably they are able to escape when the Japanese commandos attack the Spectre base.
