About This Content

Arguably ‘the greatest railway journey in the World’ comes to Train Simulator, featuring stunning scenery and an all new Class 37/4 diesel locomotive, developed by Thomson Interactive.

The original West Highland Line between Glasgow and Fort William was opened in 1894 by the North British Railway, with the extension from Fort William to Mallaig opening six years later, connecting the largest city in Scotland with the Atlantic coast.

The route, built by Robert McAlpine, boasts 11 tunnels and eight major bridge structures, including the iconic 21 arch span Glenfinnan Viaduct and Borrodale Viaduct, at the time of construction the world’s longest single span concrete arch at 124ft.

The line opened up new opportunities for tourism and a way of transporting fish catches from the coast to new markets inland. Today, the 41 mile line thrives as a tourism attraction, with steam hauled trains operating daily trips during the summer.

A key feature of the route is its Radio Electronic Token Block (RETB) signalling, which replaced semaphore signalling in 1987. The system spreads across the West Highland Line and is operated from a purpose-built signalling centre at Banavie.

Included with the route is a new Class 37/4 diesel locomotive, featuring new exterior modelling and unique simulated power and braking performance. The mode contains a wealth of detailing, including automatically fitted snowploughs according to the season, dynamically cleared snow, animated cooling fans, operating exterior fuel tank gauges, functional cab radio and RETB CDU, instrument lighting and dimming, and even a hotplate for warming your soup!

Accompanying rolling stock includes Mk1 coaches in BR blue/grey livery and Scotrail West Highland green/cream livery, Mk3 BR blue/grey livery sleeper coaches, OTA timber carriers, OAA open wagons, TTA oil tank wagons, PCA alumina wagons and YGH ‘Sealion’ ballast wagons.

With its World beating scenery and global exposure through a number of blockbuster movies, the West Highland Line Extension is a must for everyone.

train simulator west highland line extension route add-on

Great DLC for TS2015 - no real problems with this at all to report.

Fantastic scenery, great train, fun RETB system.....

10 good scenarios that range from big and challenging (130 mins) to easy to learn........ This is probably the finest route available for TS2015, it offers complexity and wonderful scenery along with some very challenging scenarios.
The engine a class 37 offers more for the purist than any engine released to date, it combines loads of operating features along with a working electronic token system, the latter feature taking a little time to grasp and use proficiently, but when in play it does add a depth not seen elsewhere in other routes or engines. I will also add that its acceleration and braking profiles are very realistic and a tad intimidating until you get the feel of things, there seems to be a much better feel for the mass of the train and it is very satisfying.
The scenery is very well modelled and truly captures the feel of the route and is quite charming, with great attention being given to lineside dwellings and stations alike.
However, there are a couple of issues that although not critical are a bit odd. One of them is in the HUD, where distance to stations is displayed, this is basically usless on this route as it shows in one instance a distance to a station of 1.55 miles, but does not get any lower until five or six minutes of travel have taken place and then begins to reduce at the distance shown on the HUD. So, you leave the station and the distance to the next station is shown as X but only after you get within the stated distance does it begin to reduce. This needs to be fixed and spoils what is otherwise a superb rendition of the route.
Also new are the multiple passenger views including hanging out of a window and different seating positions in the compartment of the carriage, all great fun.
So fix the HUD station distance issue and I think that it will be perfect.
A route for more experienced users with a good amount of play under their belt and a true learning experience for any novice or less savvy user.
I would give it 10 out of 10 except for the HUD issue.
Well done.. This is an amazing route embedded in a beautiful landscape with high quality textures which are a class on its own. When I played it the first time, I was about to quit TS after an hour, call my travel-agent and book a REAL journey to the Highlands. The atmosphere of the scenery is fabulous and it all feels authentic. The Class 37\/4 perfectly fits and is pure fun to drive - I just suggest you read the manual to understand how to operate the RETB-system (which will take you 45secs to understand) and this adds to the overall spirit of the route. It's mainly a single-track route with certain speed limits - but it's not boring as you find yourself permanently going uphill or downhill combined with curves and you need to watch speed accordingly. Rolling stock and scenarios are great as well and all on top quality.
So, if you are looking for a route outside the mainstream (and traffic) but still challenging and in the middle of a wonderful area with great viaducts, I would give it a try ..... Listen DTG. This is how a addon (West Highland Line Extension) should be for all addons that your company makes. Please take note, 3rd party developer addons are what keeps your sim alive!. The route is very beuatiful, and the signaling on the 37 is very fun and fresh its nice to try and it does have a cool bridge that turns!
