At the Presidio, the Army base in San Francisco, a female MP was conducting her rounds when she came across the officer's club and the door had been forced open. She went to investigate and was shot. The individuals who broke in got into their car and drove and what followed was high speed chase that got both the Army MP's and the San Francisco police involved, which ended badly for both. Jay Austin, a San Francisco Police detective, is sent to investigate and he is met by Lt. Colonel Caldwell, who was his commanding officer, when he was an MP on the Presidio. It seems that Austin tried to arrest an Army officer but didn't follow procedures and Caldwell didn't support him. And the murdered MP was Austin's partner. A preliminary investigation casts suspicion on the officer Austin tried to arrest.
A San Francisco civilian police detective is forced to work on a series of murders with his former enemy commanding officer while dating his daughter.
This is a good movie and a good story. Sean Connery was great in this film as well as Jack Warden and Meg Ryan. I can't say that I like Mark Harmon's character that much because he was too hard and basically argued everything with Connery. Peter Hyams is a talented film maker with both directed and cinematography. His previous film "2010, The Year We Make Contact" proved it. This film could have been nominated for an Oscar or two such as Film Editing. The script was good but could have taken itself a little less seriously and had some more points of humor. If you ever get a chance to see this movie, give it a look. It's entertaining. *** out of ****.
Although its an old movie (we're basically the same age) I still did not know it. The plot is based on an homicide investigation at the Presidio Military Base in San Francisco, by a police officer and the commander of the local Military Police. Both have a past of great differences but things get worse when the cop begins to date the military's daughter against her father's will.

This film is, therefore, a thriller with an interesting story but far from being exceptional or brilliant. Sean Connery is, as usual, charm and elegance. I think he's one of the best actors of the late twentieth century. Flawless in his role, he didn't disappoint in this film. Meg Ryan also got rid of her task competently and gave the public a great performance. Mark Harmon is less known in the movies because he has turned his career to television, but was very well in his role.

This movie is far from famous and may have great difficulty in winning the test of time. However, despite the lack of originality and the feeling that it's very close to television movies, it has an interesting story and, above all, an excellent cast, providing us some pleasant entertainment. It's an ultra-slick, ultra-flat movie that cuts like a cellophane knife. No edge, no blood.
The sex scene between Jay and Donna is longer in the Unrated Version. The latter hasn't been released in the States yet but can be found on the German DVD.
