In the semi-finals, Ash had won over Sawyer. Greninja beat Sceptile, in spite of the type-disadvantage Greninja had.

People thought Ash was finally going to win a league because:

1. Greninja beat Sceptile in spite of the disadvantage, so they thought he would beat Charizard which he is strong against.

2. Ash had battled Alain twice before-one battle he had lost and the other battle could not be completed. So losing again (ultimately) to Alain didn't make sense to them.

But that didn't happen. Greninja lost to Charizard (again), and Ash was defeated.
