This game is one of the Greats!! Even though the title has the label early access, the developer has continued to add content, and refine this gem. I purchased this game when there was just 2 to 3 stages, and 2 playable characters. This game now has 22 stages, and 4 playable characters that are completely different from one another.

The in-game artstyle is top notch, and I have mentioned this to the dev before. I absolutely love the look of this game. The stylistic design reminds me of the CGI look of the arcade versions of KIller Instinct, however Pelikan13 has his on awesome flair to the Takeover. Along with the attention to detail of both stages, and characters, which would put comic covers to shame, there is a banging soundtrack that correlates perfectly with look, and tempo of this outstanding Beat'em Up.

Gameplay reflects swift, responsive movements, and is reminiscent to any GREAT brawler that you might have encountered in your lifetime. You have a punch, kick, special, run, and gun attack for each character. This title even has a mode to where you can play through single player while swapping characters on the fly. A simple double tap of the jump button, and your character leaps off-screen while your next squad mate bounces into action.

Mannnn!! I tell you this game is great, and I have yet to regret my purchase!! I purchased this game almost 2 years ago, and have always kept it on my harddrive to see what great addition Pelikan13 adds to the game. Even though this is early access this feels complete. I have not encoutered any bugs throughout my 15.9 hours... Just get the game already!!. Takeover is a pretty good fighting adventure. Its modeled mostly after streets of rage and final fight. Fighting mayham with enemies coming from everywhere. i like the old super nes double dragon and tmnt in time games better though which is more focused and stable. Take over though has ok graphics, lowgrade animation, and a good stable story. The fighting machanics is modeled after streets of rage 1 button combo attack style, 1 button for special. 1 button jump and 1 botton ultimate which when activated made a lot of noice but didn't do much damage just pushed the enemies back. I was ok with the game but didnt like it because it had so many enemies with guns and rifles it itook the fight right out of the game. Needed a good budget to breath life into this stuggling genere and some new ideas Take over hade none of it. All in All a 6.5 out of 10 this will tease fans of the fighting adventure genere but will do little to bring in new fans. Fighting adventure games are struggling to stay alive and without a good budget and fresh ideas i don't know how long my childhood favorite genere can hold on.. Love Streets of Rage and love this. Thanks for bringing back that good old beat em up nostalgia.

This would be the perfect Streets of Rage 4. Highly recommended. WOW! I haven't played this game in a couple years. Hey noticed there was an added character. Surprise! So much more content. There are a ton of levels now, movement animations have improved significantly. Its literally a 2000s Final Fight now. There is a lot of flair in the animations and special effects. Have had the game for almost 3 years now and still in Early Access, its pretty much a finished game honestly, but it hasn't been abandoned and from my own experience here, they really have improved so much, I don't remember there actually being much of a story, now there is a cheesy hilarious low budget comic style story that you scroll through, gotta have that! The graphics and sound are really good, it has a shiny cyberpunk theme going on. There is an over use of reflections, but honestly it gives the game character. When the game came out it was a 6\/10, now its an 8\/10, kudos Pelikan13, you did done good!. The best beat-em-up game i've ever played, what ever old classic beat-em-up games had done, this game has done better. The first impression is the game looks amazingly attractive, the backgrounds of city alley, jungle, japanese garden and etc. , they all are well designed and visually appealing, especially two bonuc stages where you drive a car on highway and pilot a jet fly through the ocean, they look awesome.
The combo system is kind advanced compare to troditional beat-em-up games, you have two attack moves, punch and kick, and every cahracter has their unique firearm, you can aim down and shoot anytime as long as you have ammo. With the combination of attacks you can do some badass combo, it even has jugle which i was surprised to find out.
The difficulty is there, i never expected it would be easy, and i did strugle a few times during the playthrough, there are 1-up to pick up, but very rare. You can't just press continue and respawn from where you died like playing arcade, it's quite challenging, and just enough not to make you give up.. Perhaps looking back at how fans of the series have kept interest alive in Streets of Rage through mods, hacks and fan games, it shouldn\u2019t be too surprising that a single fan has taken it upon himself to develop a next-generation 3D Streets of Rage spiritual successor that he\u2019s always longed for.

That game is called The TakeOver and is being developed almost singlehandedly by an indie developer named Antonis Pelekanos (aka Pelikan13). Prior to The TakeOver, Pelekanos was developing \u201890s Arcade Racer that was funded via a successful Kickstarter campaign before publisher Nicalis purchased the rights to the game. Since then, Pelekanos has turned his full focus on The TakeOver and has consistently released frequent updates to the game with the final release expected in the coming months.

A lifetime Streets of Rage fan, Pelekanos told us the project started out more as an experiment to test his ability at programming than anything else.

\u201cWhen development started, there were no long-term plans for it,\u201d he said. \u201cThis was my first attempt at programming a game, and up to that point, I had only worked on games as an artist. [My goal] was to see if Streets of Rage\u2019s gameplay and feel could be replicated using modern graphics in Unity. After some time working on the game in my free time, I was confident enough with the results and decided to turn it into a full-time project and original title.\u201d

Considering Pelekanos\u2019 lack of experience, it\u2019s certainly an amazing feat that he\u2019s been able to create a game as solid as The TakeOver. Like in the original games, you have several characters to choose from in Ethan, Connor and Megan, who are not so loosely based on Axel, Max and Blaze, from the original series. While The TakeOver borrows very liberally from the Streets of Rage series, (it even features a track from Koshiro himself!) Pelekanos has managed to create a game that feels more like a true sequel in many ways than merely a remake.

Jumping into the first level, you\u2019re instantly brought back to the opening stage in the original Streets of Rage, with visuals that are drop dead gorgeous, featuring fully 3D backgrounds and pre-rendered sprites. The super-detailed backgrounds are littered with junked-out cars, trash and boxes, while pink neon lights glowing against the rain-soaked inner-city streets; it sets a perfect scene for what\u2019s to come. As you punch and kick your way through waves of thugs, the entire screen shakes in a way that is both ridiculous and fun at the same time.

Other stages feature bars, harbors, more city locales and even a car chase and jet fighter bonus stages that gives the game an over-the-top, \u201880s action movie feel.

Of course, every beat \u2018em up fan knows the most important aspect of a solid brawler is how satisfying the combat is and how responsive the controls are, right? While The TakeOver doesn\u2019t break any new ground in the gameplay department, it does introduce several welcomed additions to the Streets of Rage formula that makes it feel fresh and exciting.

The addition of a combo system helps break up the monotony that hinders many beat \u2018em ups, but The TakeOver takes it a step further by slowly filling up a \u201cRage\u201d meter when you perform combos and don\u2019t take damage. If you can fill it up completely, you can unleash Rage mode, where you\u2019re able to call in police reinforcements for a devastating, screen-clearing attack, just like in the original games. There\u2019s also a roll maneuver that comes in really handy when you\u2019re surrounded by thugs. The inclusion of guns for each character was a risky decision, but it\u2019s implemented well as they\u2019re not overpowered, and your ammo can run out really quickly if you rely on them too much.

Overall, each character feels unique, as Connor is slow and lumbering but really powerful, while Megan is more agile and light on her feet. The feeling of weight for each character is done very well.

As previously mentioned, Koshiro created a track for the game, and it suits it beautifully. Outside of his contribution, the rest of the soundtrack is solid but doesn\u2019t live up to Koshiro\u2019s masterful work in the original games.

While the game isn\u2019t technically finished yet, it does currently have all of its planned gameplay features, stages and cutscenes available to play. We would like to see some aspects ironed out before the final release, like some refinement to the boss fights as several of them can be beaten rather easily and sometimes follow similar movement and attack patterns.

Ultimately, what makes The TakeOver such a joy to play is that it doesn\u2019t stray very far from its source material or try to be anything it\u2019s not \u2013 it\u2019s very clearly heavily inspired by Streets of Rage, and that is great news for fans of the series.
