A widowed rancher Claire McNichol and her teenage son, Jesse, and the dramatic events that cause them to reevaluate their relationships with one another and the world around them. Set against a rugged, rural backdrop, Claire and Jesse, along with their longtime friend and ranch foreman Purly Owens, work the cattle ranch that Claire once shared with her husband who was killed in a ranching accident. Claire counts among her closest friends Rose Handy and Sheriff Wade Messer. As the over-protective Claire contemplates selling the ranch and moving to San Francisco with Jesse, a life-threatening accident strands her deep in the wilderness with only a wild wolf for company. When Jesse realizes his mother is missing, he heads into the mountains alone to try and find her, but soon finds more than he bargained for when he encounters deadly poachers holed up at his mom's cabin and discovers they have killed a game warden. The ruthless poachers turn their sights on Jesse and stalk him through the mountains, intent on getting rid of the boy before he can reveal their crimes.Suddenly she meets two cubs near the place and after a while papa wolf, who was searching for his mate. While Claire and the wolf form an unlikely alliance in their struggle to survive, Jesse is forced to grow up fast as he races to evade the killers and rescue his mom before it's too late.
A woman finds herself trapped in the woods with the one animal she fears most--the wolf. As an alliance with the wolf grows, so does her will to survive.
I saw this when it came out a few years ago, and thinking about it, Night reminded me of the worst movie I ever saw, Field of Honor. Don't get me wrong, Everett McGill is a fine actor, and he has done better work after that awful piece of poop. But consider the ff parallels between the two films:

In Field of Honor... An army officer is the only one who survives a surprise attack during the Korean War. His right foot is injured and he limps. The other two survivors are not soldiers, but civilians; a young lady and her younger brother. The officer has a dog for a companion.

In Night of the Wolf... A widow is the only one who goes by horseback from her house to another cottage up the mountains. She falls off her horse and breaks her LEFT ankle Aside from herself, there are two poachers on the loose and her son, who is looking for her. Her only companions are a trapped wolf and its family.

Other than that, Night was the better film.

Can't wait for Grindhouse. See you @ the movies! This came on the Hallmark channel the other night (not a good sign to begin with) but as there was nothing else on I decided to give it a go.

Alas - my fears were correct - this was very poor fare indeed. The presence of Anne Archer, Robert Urich and C. Thomas Howell gave me a brief inkling that this movie might rise above the usual TV dirge and actually display some sort of ingenuity when it came to creating a piece of art. But no - I was wrong.

The story is basically an interwine of bad-ass poachers killing game-wardens and animals in the hills and one woman's relationship with a trapped wolf. Archer's character hates wolves because of what happened to her dead husband years earlier but when she gets thrown from her horse and lays with a broken ankle for 5 days with nobody for company but a snared wolf - she begins to respect the animal. She realises that they are not much different from herself.

Utter tosh really but Archer's character is almost unplayable as her lines and situations are atrocious. The late Robert Urich fares a little better with his deliveries and Howell is wasted in a periphery character appearence.

Several times I wanted to get up and switch the thing off but I stuck it out to the very predictable end. Not exactly a complete waste of 2 hours of my life but not far from it.
