About This Game

General Information

Juan Torres and his family were the target of an uncountable number of rumors and several disappearances that took place in El Chacal, a small village of around 4,800 inhabitants, located in the arid mountainous region of Salta, a province of Argentina.

Among the stories spread around the surrounding villages, legends involving cannibalism, black magic, sects and all kinds of superstitions were heard.

It was also said that Juan Torres was the heir of a large fortune and, somehow, with no claim raised against him, he and his family managed to control the entire town and establish their own law.

The family was made up of Juan, Celia Torres and his only child, Jeronimo.

I really liked the first two parts in the Doorways series and this one is no exception.

Some say the in-game graphics look a bit dated, but they sure do trick for me. Personally, I think it's an amazing art style throughout the whole series. It's pretty disturbing and so are the background stories and the creepy sounds you'll hear from time to time when discovering new areas. This one tops it on all levels.

One downside of the previous two parts was that the puzzles were a bit too easy. This one delivers more. Especially in the part called 'The Mansion' which is also amazingly beautiful.

I do wonder about the mental state of the developers though.. the last part is.. sick! Loving it!! :). I played Doorways: Holy Mountains of Flesh both in early access and now the FULL RELEASE! Nothing has changed!

This game does have incredible pacing. You will be pacing very much across the levels over and over trying to solve innovative puzzles. Who thought to hide a key that opens a locked door. I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS IN A GAME BEFORE.
SO INNOVATIVE!

And monster, you only hear them, they do not appear for the greatest monsters are in your own IMAGINATION! GENIUS DEVELOPERS! I applaud you for respecting your audience and trusting us to be scared by audio cues alone.

I eventually got stuck in this game after wandering around the same school over and over again. Still 10/10 WOULD BUY A++++++. A key has been provided by the developers, as I found the previous installments to be somewhat enjoyable*

I'd like to recommend the game, but the first act hasn't really managed to convince me. Sure, the atmosphere is great, especially at the end, but the setting looks bland most of the time (despite the devs changing to a better engine) and I found the monster to be more annoying than scary.

The first time I saw it in the shadows, it seemed to be promising. And it certainly looks better than the actual setting. But then I got killed ... and killed ... and killed. And then it wasn't scary anymore. Sure, it took me a while to notice that I had to go somewhere else first, as neither running nor sneaking could get me past, but every single time you encounter the creature, it always does exactly the same thing. Except for at the end, that is.

I also would have preferred the more linear nature of the previous installments, especially since it isn't always clear what you need to do next. There was a room I needed to light up, but since the game is really dark (and seems to fade out distant light sources, which might seem neat but annoyed me more than anything), I didn't even notice the cord I needed to plug in for quite a while. And then you need to climb towards a ventilation shaft, which should be easy ... if not for dozens of small objects that act like waist high fences and won't let you jump onto them (the worst of which can be found in a room full of benches that might as well be walls). And neither can you pull yourself onto the object that needs to be climbed ... despite the character then pulling himself into the ventilation shaft.

Changing how the monster acts, or at least adding some variety, could certainly improve how I see the game. But if it keeps on doing exactly the same thing in every subsequent act, I'd rather not continue playing, as the atmosphere alone is not enough to keep my interest. And neither is what little I've seen of the story thus far.. The atmosphere for this game is amazing! The fear produced goes well beyond your typical jump scares. The navigation and puzzles were difficult enough to make the game interesting, but not so difficult as to leave you feeling salty and frustrated. It was really easy to immerse yourself into this world and you can almost feel someone breathing down your neck around every corner. By the end of the first part, I found myself aching for more content. Can not wait for full release!! A must have for all horror game collectors.. Doorways is a great game if you are a fan of horror.... headache/10. A dark Museum full of nothing.. Why not try it. Let's be honest. The only bad thing about this game is the poor optimization. It's more ressource intensive than some AAA titles.

This said, this game so far is a masterpiece of atmosphere, storytelling and horror. The school is probably one of the creepiest places I've visited in a horror game, and slowly learning what happened there bluilt such a climate of tension and dread, it's pretty amazing actually. I can't wait for chapter 2, this game is definitely worth every single penny.. Good conclusion to Doorways series but not a perfect one. It still has the same dense atmosphere, good level design and great puzzles. But it also has a few problems:

  • Too much object hunting. It's so easy to miss a crucial object, get stuck and have to search through every single room in the level again to look for what you have missed. Gets boring really fast.
  • The room sliding puzzle. Great idea, nice design, BUT it's just too complicated. Too many necessary actions, too complex solutions, too few clues. After an hour I had to use a walkthrough.
  • Controller support. Turning around is slow and stiff. Most of the game it's ok but during the platforming sections where you need to go fast it's really bad. I had to switch to kb+m to be able to complete them.
But it's still a good horror game, much better than most games on Steam in this genre.

First of all, we have the release date confirmed for the final version of Doorways: Holy Mountains of Flesh, which will include the third and final Act "The Temple"
It will be available outside Early Access on August 10th (Wednesday). That's it, in less than a month!

First of all, remember that next Wednesdat we'll be FINALLY releasing the full version of the game (1.0), including the last Act 3: The Temple!

While the first chapter of the game was published in Desura and on our Website (using the Humble Widget) on August 15, 2013, and then the final version of the first two chapters on September 20 of the same year, that wasn’t the beginning of this adventure.

A year and a half earlier, in March 2012, we started developing the game as a team, Martin Voychisko and me, in my room in my mum’s house. (picture)
But neither was on that date the beginning of everything. Before that we made prototypes in late 2011, when I was still working at NGD Studios.

And yet, that was not the beginning. What I’m going to tell you happened exactly 5 years ago, illustrated by the first picture from the album. This is something I’ve come to find out recently, when I was looking through some photos my mother took on a trip we made to El Palmar (Entre Rios, Argentina). It was on that time when I made the first sketches of what would become Doorways (at that time it wasn’t even named that way). I’m also sharing (unpublished before :D) some drawings that I done at that time, which turned out to be part of the final chapter of the saga.

While I believe that we become better developers as time went on, it is also worth noting that it was not easy. The developer team changed over time and those changes meant improvements, but sometimes they meant a step backwards. However, in some way or the other we’ve always managed to create something that was always better than what we had created before –we‘ve gained experience, we’ve put it into practice and we never thought in giving up.

It is truly rewarding to see what we have achieved so far in all this time :)
And I would like to thank once again all those people who have supported us: family, friends, colleagues and followers of the game.
