Very good simulator, needs more work to be sure but this is wonderful. I hope they keep updating this and supporting this game because I've had alot of fun on this. 10.00? no bad in my say.. I'm reviewing the early access version. Even though some planned features are not yet implemented already this looks and works as fully finished product. This game simulates diesel train operations in England around 60-ties, so one may expect left side driving with classic semaphores. I don't really know English rail but it seems that everything is modeled as it should be. We have markings for speed limits, yellow distant signals and red semaphores. Junctions work as intended so the signal shows which branch we are going to take. Therefore the game is realistic, allowing for true hudless driving (as long as we know the route - where are the stations and speed limits). This is amazing. Physics is good, the brakes are modeled very nicely - for example longer train will cause the brake to respond with a lag. Sounds are nice. These old diesel trains have mechanical gearbox, so driving is a little more challenging than with modern train - we need to switch gears like in a car. At this point my feeling is that the gearbox is not yet fully modeled as it should be - we can make mistakes, like stopping with high gear or switching gears with power on and nothing wrong happens. Hopefully this will be corrected with full game release. AI drivers are not scripted, they try to react to what they actually see. It's really a good simulator for a hardcore simmer like me. But even a total newbie to train driving will have a lot of fun. There is a simple mode in which we only operate accelerate/decelerate buttons without taking care of the gearbox, throttle and brakes, so one can learn to feel the train first. But even in the advanced mode we can use help of AI driver who will tell us which key to press to operate properly. Again it's not scripted in any matter, this helper will try to react to the situation and tell us what to do. For example if we are going too fast, he will tell us to apply a brake (and which key to use), when we slow down, he will tell us to release the brake. He will show us when to change gears, where to stop, which button to press before departure to warn the passengers etc. This is absolutely AMAZING feature, which will teach anyone to drive the train effectively. Of course as most train simulators do we can use a little cheat - track monitor. It shows us incoming speed limits, stations and signals, so we can react properly and play even if we don't know the route at all. We can also configure the track monitor to show us the indication of the signal or only signal placement - in the latter we have to read the signals ourselves. At the end of the journey we get a summary and a graph showing our real speed as a function of distance, compared to what we were expected to have and to the speed limit. Another nice feature which helps us to improve. We also get a score depending on speed limit compliance, timetable but also used fuel (energy). We get lower score for using different helpers (like track monitor) which encourages us to learn more realistic driving. For each route there is a whole day timetable, which is very nice. We can take any train we want and we will meet also other trains from thetimetable while driving. There are no scripted scenarios. I'm not sure if there are random events, but it happened to me that I had to wait under red signal and I also got a message from the dispatcher to tell me why I wait. We also have time compression if we are bored with waiting. As for the routes - apart from one demo route, there are two fully functional but fictional routes. They are pretty long, allowing for over one hour of driving one way. They also have several branches so we are not forced just to drive forth and back. Still I would like to see real life routes. It might be possible in the future. Also a route editor should arrive soon, allowing for user made workshop routes. Summarizing here - this is a great product. It really works well. I like the realism and many new ideas introduced to train driving. One issue which is not really important to me, but might be important to other people is graphics. It might seem a little sparse and not yet polished. It's not as beautiful as in some costly modern games. But remember that this is still early access game so it might improve a lot in the future. For me personally it's not a flaw. I still play OMSI2 and don't really care about graphics that much as long as I have realistic product which gives the feel of driving a real vehicle (and this one does). Again it's not bad, but maybe just a little sparse in the details. Highly recommended.. Work in progress but I like it very much, looking forward to improvments over time.. This is my favourite train simulator for passenger operations (Run8 is my favourite for freight). Diesel Railcar Simulator works great, the physics are very accurate, I get very high FPS and graphically it looks really nice, so refreshing compared to the Dovetail crap.. The game is really nice! :). This is a very enjoyable diesel train simulator with some very nice touches, great driving dynamics and with a nice balance of features/gameplay. It's not perfect by any means but on the balance I enjoy this near the same level as the best scenarios in Train Simulator already - with the reward coming from the physics, sounds, the breaking dynamics, the unexpected delays, the changing gears and the stopping at the right place and the score for not abusing the 'mechanical' bits of the train. There's also nice touches like the break pressure guage, which measures the pressure near the driver end.and it shows the pressure equalising, which acts quite differently in a short vs a longer train. Another little pleasure is the suspension and very nice wobbling when switching tracks - it's very well done. Things that could be improved: - The routing of lines through landscape is far from realistic - In general, the scenery could use some attention, some realism in town planning and variety - The 1960s had a lot of sides, loading ramps and goods traffics which is entirely missing (yes I get it's a 1 man team) - Much higher LODs for capable graphics cards Regardless, I totally respect what this one man dev team has accomplished and that it's this much fun to drive. TSW for example is so 'dead' in it's traffic, variety & scenarios - this just completely trashes it in having lively traffic, having 100s of fun and interesting scenarios to drive and by putting enjoyable and challenging physics into a sim. Recommended for any train 'simmer'.

Route editor preview video 2 (Scenery) : More progress on the route editor, this is how scenery editing works now (no audio, video sped up by 30%): The main principle of the first version is to allow easy and fast creation of vast areas of scenery at the expense of details. More detailed control and features will be added in future updates.. Bugfix update released : Version 1.2.3 is a bugfix update with many small fixes and improvements based on your reports and suggestions.. Route editor preview video 1 : Work on the route editor is still progressing! Most of the track, signal, station and other infrastructure editing features are ready. Scenery editing still needs to be completed before the first beta test version can be released. The video below shows how the 2D and 3D editing modes work.. Timetable editor beta : The first beta version of the timetable editor is now available! The editor enables you to create your own traffic to the existing routes with custom station stops, running times and train formations. Head over to for instructions and discussion.. Another small bugfix update : More small bugfixes! This new version should require a bit less memory than the old one and be less prone to crashing. Notice: simple controls are the default again.. Timetable editor available : The first editor is now public along with Workshop support! Click the "New" or "Edit" buttons at the top of the service selection screen to open the timetable editor, or choose a different timetable from the drop-down menu. To do stuff in the editor, click on things or empty space with the right-hand mouse button. A quick guide for using the timetable editor will be added to the guides soon. The existing timetables have also been revised for this update: the running and starting times are now more relaxed for some services that previously were impossible to finish on time. You still may need to try a particular service multiple times to get favourable traffic conditions from the random number generator. Don't miss the new experimental shiftwork timetable for the demo route! The "Failed buffet" service is intended to be rescued instead of driven normally.. Route editor beta test : To participate in the testing, please open your Steam client and right-click on the game, then select Properties from the pop-up menu. From the properties window go to the Betas tab and choose the beta from the drop-down menu (no password required).. Crash after subscribing to workshop routes : Many of you have noticed that there are new routes in the workshop available for subscription. Something that wasn't clearly mentioned before is that the routes work in the beta test version only! Trying to use them in the current version will crash the game when you try to open any of the (old) routes. If the game crashes upon opening a route you can fix it either by: 1) unsubscribing from the routes in the workshop, or, 2) downloading the new beta test version by opening your Steam client and right-clicking on the game, then selecting Properties from the pop-up menu. From the properties window go to the Betas tab and choose the beta from the drop-down menu (no password required).
