Fearing the worst, the geologist Dr Amy Barnes warns the citizens of downtown Los Angeles of an impending disaster after a tremendous earthquake takes them by surprise. With clear signs of an underground volcanic formation beneath the La Brea Tar Pits, the chief of the city's Office of Emergency Management department, Mike Roark, begins an investigation against the clock, when molten magma erupts, obliterating everything in its path. Can two mere mortals stand up against nature's wrath?
In the city of Los Angeles, it is nice quiet and routine. Until an earthquake occurred. The director of the city's emergency management, Michael Roark believes that something big is about to happen, so he finds a geologist named Amy Barnes to help him investigate. What they will realize that the earthquake is a sign of a volcano forming in the city. The volcano formed at the La Brea Tarpits. Now Roark has to use every resource in the city to stop the volcano from consuming Los Angeles.
I could not stop laughing through this whole movie! The storyline becomes so predictable, once you figure out that the writer/director thinks that the audience is filled with idiots.

There are so many scenes that defy belief. The ultimate is the scene where the subway conductor goes back for a dead man (may as well be for all he knew) while the train is melting from the lava flow?!?!?!? Then he carries him through the train while his shoes melt?!?!?!?!?!?! Then he jumps off the train into lava (deliberately) and throws the guy to safety???!???!

Give me a break! Uneven plateaus under the earth in Los Angeles have separated far enough for molten lava at the Earth's core to come erupting to the surface--of the La Brea Tar Pits? "Volcano" is truly the pits, what with an emergency management director rushing around after his daughter and a female seismologist (Anne Heche, being 'plucky') tossing off sarcastic witticisms as if she were one of Charlie's Angels. It's impossible to keep a straight face watching a picture like this, basic in its desire to be nothing more than a rousing death-fest. Heche's character may be the most offensive; arriving at all the appropriate places too quickly--and knowing too much too fast--she's a writer's folly. We also get heroics and wise-ass observations galore, but it all rings very hollow--as if everyone involved were in on a private joke. *1/2 from ****
In fact, this is one of the best pure disaster movies ever made (not that it has much competition). Congratulations to director Mick Jackson for a job well done.
