The sheriff of a small town in southwest Texas must keep custody of a murderer whose brother, a powerful rancher, is trying to help him escape. After a friend is killed trying to muster support for him, he and his deputies - a disgraced drunk and a cantankerous old cripple - must find a way to hold out against the rancher's hired guns until the marshal arrives. In the meantime, matters are complicated by the presence of a young gunslinger - and a mysterious beauty who just came in on the last stagecoach.
A small-town sheriff in the American West enlists the help of a cripple, a drunk, and a young gunfighter in his efforts to hold in jail the brother of the local bad guy.
This is one of the two best cowboy movies ever made .... the other one being Rio Bravo (essentially the same movie).

It has all the things a Western SHOULD have: A tall, rugged hero, a drunk deputy/best friend, a pretty girl, and an arch-badguy.

Made in a time when directors didn't seem to have too much of an axe to grid, and with due measures of fun and heartache, this movie must surely qualify for the "Best John Wayne Movie Ever" award (if there is such a thing!) and also "Least Schmaltz With A Woman Involved Award".

On first reflection, having Ricky Nelson singing amongst all the bullets and corpses might not seem such a great idea, and one usually never associated the Duke with musicals .... but remember that this is also the last of the "innocent" movies ever to be made.

Thereafter, it seemed that Hollywood was always protesting about SOMETHING: Vietnam, Nixon, racism, Communism etc. and this is reflected in later Westerns (Little Big Man being an especial example of Hollywood propaganda at its best).

All round, there are few better ways of spending a couple of hours while still keeping your clothes on.
This movie is what a western should be. I am a lifelong hater of Western filmsa genre but Rio Bravo, along with Destry(Original and remake), and Tombstone, are the only 3 Westerns that I would gladly sit through.

This film features fine performances from all of the actors especially Dean Martinthe drunken defeated Dude. The character of the fallen gunslinger is a cowboy film cliché but Martin makes it seem fresh and original.

The scene in which Dean Martin, and Ricky Nelson sing together is one of my favorite scenes of all time, because the 2 of them are magical together.

This film is a little long, and slower on action than most others but i would highly recommend this to any fans or non fans of this genre.

Although probably not properly called singing, Walter Brennan had some songs that were on the charts and he had some albums. He joined Dean and Ricky in singing "Cindy, Cindy." In 1966, John Wayne and the director Howard Hawks reunited for El Dorado. In El Dorado it's Robert Mitchum playing the drunk sheriff and Wayne isn't a lawman but a gunslinger trying to help Mitchum get back on his feet. James Caan plays a character called Mississippi more or less replacing the Colorado character here and Arthur Hunnicutt plays the ageing deputy Bull - replacing the Stumpy character. The film doesn't begin to resemble Rio Bravo until around the middle act but both have enough similar main characters and plot scenarios to the point that it's regardeda re-working.

In 1970, Hawks and Wayne once again joined up for a western called Rio Lobo which again many regarda re-working of Rio Bravo but it's actually very different. The first act is set during the Civil War and when the film becomes more of a traditional western it actually uses plot elements from both Rio Bravo and El Dorado.

No. Dude is an ex-deputy sheriff in the opening scene. He helps Chance capture Joe Burdette and take him over to jail and Chance gives him his old job back. This isn't shown and the opening few minutes are dialogue free but it's clear that he isn't a lawman at the start of the film by the fact that Dude is unshaven and dirty looking and isn't wearing a badge. Then later on, Chance remembers to give Dude his guns back that he's been storing for him and while they go over to retrieve Dude's clothes from the hotel, he asks Chance what his pay will be.
