Su Qi-Er retired from his life as a renowned Qing dynasty general in order to pursue his dream of a family and his own martial arts school. However, Su's peaceful life is shattered when his vengeful adopted brother, Yuan Lie, kidnaps his son and leaves Su for dead. Saved from his demise by his wife Ying and the reclusive doctor Yu, Su resolves to perfect his technique so that he may defeat Yuan Lie and reunite his family. Suffering from visions that he aided in his training by two of the "Eight Immortals" in the form of the mystical "God of Wushu" and the eccentric "Old Sage" master of Drunken Boxing. He embarks on the path that would eventually give rise to the legend of the "King of Beggars."
I am basing my 9 stars for two reasons. First, the choreography is top notch. Second the cinematography is top notch. Simply put, this a very beautiful movie to watch. As for the story and plot...it's an action movie with a fairly simple story. It was designed to entertain with action and composition so the story is not the main vehicle which it uses to engage the viewer. If you are looking for extremely beautiful images, super insane kinetic choreography and fight scenes, you have come to the right place. The fights are on par with and perhaps even surpass Crouching Tiger, or Hero. Woo Ping just keeps improving on his choreography. I don't know how he does it, but he does it in every new movie. This is a definite purchase on bluray for my collection.
I think the movie was quite entertaining. The fight scenes were great, perhaps not as superb as fight scenes in Jet Li movies (like Fearless), but close enough.

I feel the director sort of copied from older works like Forbidden Kingdom (drunken master but same director), The Drunken Master, Fearless (the whole tiger claw thing --> five venom finger fist). I really don't know why they perpetuate this drunken master idea.

I only wish they used the characters God of Wushu and Old Sage more in the film. I don't like it when a hero is victorious alone, he should be victorious with team effort (which would be more realistic).

Regardless, the fight scenes make up for the film. There is a ton of action, much in the sense of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. The emotional scenes were pretty good, but nothing unique. I think you'll enjoy watching this in the movies, so don't think it's not worth your money, the amount of fight scenes will cover that. The story is painfully simplistic, and it becomes quickly apparent that the narrative is a crude cement to hold together the carnage.
While due to the Cinematograph Film (Animals) Act 1937, 22 seconds of the story about beggar Su has to be removed, the UK DVD only lacks 4 seconds of footage.
