A young reporter's grandfather wins a sweepstakes, but it turns out that his ticket is phony. The reporter finds out that the police are looking for the criminal ring responsible for the phony-sweepstakes racket, so he and his young brother set out to track down the gang responsible and expose them.
During the late 30s and early 40s, Frankie Darro was a most unusual sort of leading man. He was tiny by most standards...jockey-sized even. And yet, in so many of his films he played an honest but tough guy who was good with his fists. There really isn't anyone like him today. In "Tough to Handle" he stars with Kane Richmond, a man known mostly for starring in serials like "Spy Smasher" and other B-movies...and "Tough to Handle" is clearly a B, running at just short of an hour like most of these pictures.

The story begins with an old man realizing he's just won the Irish Sweepstakes. However, what he doesn't know is that the ticket he bought was a forgery...and the real winner already has claimed her purse. The problem is that when he tries to redeem it, he'll learn the truth...and so the gang that sold it to him go to him to get that ticket. In the process, the man is killed and the guys don't find the ticket. That's because his grandson (Darro) is holding the ticket for safekeeping.

A nice guy reporter (Richmond) thinks that the old man didn't die of a heart attack or old age but thinks the gang killed him. However, the old man's grandson and granddaughter can't believe that nice Mr. Franco is behind all this and try as he might, the reporter cannot convince them. Only time will tell...and by then it might be too late, as Franco is more than willing to use muscle or murder to make all this just go away. But the big boss is angry....and wants Franco to just pay off the grandkids and be done with it. What's next?

This film has a decent plot and a few nice story elements, such as the fake drunk. It also, unfortunately, has an ending that is just a bit too clever to be believable...but it's still not enough to ruin the picture. Worth seeing if you get a chance. This is the third film I've come across with Frankie Darro and Kane Richmond together at the top of the credits, the other two being "Born to Fight" (1936) and "The Devil Diamond" (1937). I've always liked Darro with his faux Cagney look, and Richmond makes for a handsome leading man, though his stiffness as an actor didn't get him too far.

This one's a fairly brisk flick with an interesting hook that was written in a fairly clever manner given the era. The comedy relief character, a hissing drunk (Johnstone White) that shows up every so often, turns out to be the invisible crime boss calling the shots in a counterfeit Irish Sweepstakes scam. Top 40 Club owner Tony Franco (Harry Worth), gets his marching orders from Whitney off screen, and then parcels out tough guy assignments to his henchmen Jake (Stanley Price) and Spike (Jack Ingram). These two bozos are about as inept as they come, blowing one attempt after another trying to recover a phony sweepstakes ticket.

Phylliis Cerf portrays Gloria, the sister of Darro's character Mike Sanford, and gets some worthy screen time with a fairly well done song number at the Top 40. However the gal that will really get your attention is Franco's moll Myra, played by Betty Burgess. I don't know what it was, but that sultry look (maybe that's what it was) had me glued to her character whenever she appeared.

With a generally decent story going, I had to groan when it came time to wrap things up at the finale. The good guys and bad guys traded off gaining the upper hand and it just looked very weak, and then our boy Whitney guns down Franco. It was quite convenient that the cops arrived at that very minute to arrest the rest of the villains. If real life worked like that we'd have some very boring films made today.

You know, I felt bad for Grandpa Sanford (Burr Caruth), being roughed up by Spike like that and just dropping dead for no apparent reason. But if you kept an eye on him at the opening of the picture, he never paid for the newspaper he got from grandson Mike!
