The oil and minerals contained in Burma were the cause of Imperial Japan's occupation beginning with China. Now Lord Louis Mountbatten was chosen to be the Supreme Allied Commander, South East Asia Command.
The Tanaka Memorial, adopted by Japan in 1927, stated that the island nation must adopt a policy of blood and iron. It called for the conquest of China, Asia and Europe before embarking on the subjugation of the rest of the free world. In 1937, Japan's execution of the plan called for invading China. Rather than allowing it's resources to fall into enemy hands, China, under the leadership of Chaing Kai Shek, destroyed much of the infrastructure in Japan's path. The Chinese people themselves began a mass migration retreat across the Himalayas to Burma.

In order to acquire Burma, Japan set it's sights on the independent state of Siam to the East. Siam's acquiescence occurred only one week following Japan's stunning destruction of U.S. naval forces at Pearl Harbor. Just a few months later in May, 1942, Burma fell with the Allies driven out.

With the Axis powers controlling the Indian Ocean and on constant patrol for Allied submarines, getting supplies to China was the most difficult task of the War. However in late 1943, the Allies challenged the Burmese jungle to build a rail and pipeline link to the Chinese interior. The construction of the Ledo Road was one of the great feats of war time history, linking the Burma Road to the rest of China still not controlled by the Japanese. This episode details Japan's invasion of China in 1936 and subsequent conquest of Burma after Pearl Harbor before China's liberation was aided by the Allies especially the British as they come back to the Mandalay crossing that helped make victory possible...Lots of info for a segment that dealt with how obsessed Japan was with conquering the world starting with its Asian neighbor, China. India is also mentioned as one of the Allies that received supplies in the fight against the House of the Rising Sun. As always, stirring narration and music by, respectively, Leonard Graves and Richard Rodgers help make this episode of Victory at Sea as exciting as it is. Most highly recommended for World War II history buffs and anyone interested in real-life drama presented on film.
