Van Damme plays Rudy whose father, Oscar is an archaeologist. His father goes to Israel. When his father disappears, he goes to Israel to find him. The chief of police claims that his father never entered the country, but an old friend of his father's was expecting him and before he could tell him more, some people start shooting at them. He manages to get away, and when he goes back to the police chief, he still refuses to believe that a crime has been committed. He then has Rudy deported, but Rudy convinces the police woman assigned to bring him to the airport not to and help him find his father.
How do you make a film about Islamic terrorism without mentioning Islamic terrorism by name? "The Order", a film which came out shortly after the 9/11 attacks, does so by positing the existence of a fourth monotheistic religion in the Middle East. According to the film this religion, referred to simply as The Order, was founded by Charles Le Vaillant, a French crusader who, disillusioned with warfare and bloodshed in the name of religion, hoped to unite what he saw as the best elements in Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Despite being regarded as heretical by orthodox Christians, Jews and Muslims, the Order has survived into modern times and the film deals with a power-struggle between the moderate and extremist wings of the movement. The moderates continue to believe in Le Vaillant's ideal of interfaith harmony, but the extremists believe that their scriptures tell of a coming religious war in the Middle East which it is their sacred duty to hasten.

The internal struggles within the Order could be seen as a metaphor for the clash between fundamentalism and liberalism within Islam (or, for that matter, within Christianity), but this is not a serious film about religion but rather an action-thriller with religious fanatics playing the part of the bad guys. The principal bad guy is Cyrus, who has become leader of the Order after assassinating his moderate predecessor Pierre. Cyrus plans to destroy the Dome of the Rock, the holy Islamic shrine in Jerusalem, with a bomb, thus sparking off a war between Israel and the Islamic world.

The principal good guy, to whom falls the task of thwarting Cyrus' evil scheme, is a man named Rudy Cafmeyer, although the word "good" in this context needs a certain amount of qualification. Rudy is the son of an archaeologist named Ozzie Cafmeyer, and shares his father's interest in historic artefacts, although he is more interested in stealing and smuggling such objects than in their scientific study. (In an early scene we see him stealing a precious Faberge egg). Rudy's conversion to the side of righteousness comes when his father, who was researching the early history of the Order, is kidnapped in Jerusalem, and he travels to Israel to try and rescue him.

There is a brief cameo from Charlton Heston, in one of his last screen roles, as Ozzie Cafmeyer's old friend Professor Walter Finlay. (Heston was to make only one further movie, "My Father, Rua Alguem 5555"). Unfortunately, Finlay is killed off early on. I say "unfortunately" because Heston is by far the best thing about this film, showing a class which sets him far above the general level of mediocrity which surrounds him. (Like another reviewer, I felt that the film might have been better if Heston had been cast in the more substantial role of Ozzie). Jean-Claude Van Damme, although he can look convincing in action sequences, is never the most expressive of actors, although things could have been worse. The part of Rudy was originally intended for the even more wooden Steven Seagal who cannot even rely, as Van Damme can, on the excuse that English is not his first language. (Seagal himself was later to play a thief-turned-legitimate-archaeologist in "Out for a Kill"; archaeologists have made popular, if unlikely, action heroes ever since Harrison Ford first introduced us to the character of Indiana Jones).

Despite a potentially interesting theme, "The Order" ends up as no more than a mediocre, below average action thriller. None of the other actors stand out, although I was surprised to see Ben Cross as Cyrus' sidekick, a corrupt Israeli policeman named Ben Ner (presumably a pun on the name of one of Charlton Heston's most famous characters). Cross was tipped for stardom after his excellent performance as Harold Abrahams in "Chariots of Fire". The fact that he has ended up with fifth billing in something like "The Order" might suggest that those predictions were sadly mistaken. 4/10 Hey, I can enjoy an action movie and do now and then. It can be great fun just leaning back and watch the badguys getting a well deserved spanking.

But the Order has been judged and found lacking. Van Dammes fighting is ok but neither good nor spectacular (though I'm in no way competent to judge martial arts, just what I find exciting), and the plot isn't very good, and thats with the expectations you'd put on a film like this. The Quest and Double Team are much better. So all in all, this is for Van Damme fans. The rest of us better see another film.
