Original Title: Kick-Ass 2
Genge: Action,Comedy,Crime
After Kick-Ass' insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes, our hero joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist -- reborn as The Mother F%&*^r -- only the blade-wielding Hit Girl can prevent their annihilation. When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young vigilante Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and Dave. With graduation looming and uncertain what to do, Dave decides to start the world's first superhero team with Mindy. Unfortunately, when Mindy is busted for sneaking out as Hit Girl, she's forced to retire-leaving her to navigate the terrifying world of high-school mean girls on her own. With no one left to turn to, Dave joins forces with Justice Forever, run by a born-again ex-mobster named Colonel Stars and Stripes. Just as they start to make a real difference on the streets, the world's first super villain, The Mother F%&*^r, assembles his own evil league and puts a plan in motion to make Kick-Ass and Hit Girl pay for what they did to his dad. But there's only one problem with his scheme: If you mess with one member of Justice Forever, you mess with them all.
Following Kick-Ass' heroics, other citizens are inspired to become masked crusaders. But Red Mist leads his own group of evil supervillains to get revenge, kill Kick-Ass and destroy everything he stands for.
I usually shy away from reviewing films online. There are tons of others out there to do that, but when a movie sticks in my head for more than a day after seeing it, I get compelled.
Now, I want to judge this essentially as a standalone. I don't expect a sequel to mimic the style of the first entirely. That allows things to get stale too quickly.
First, the premise of the film is great and it is filmed well. Nothing really stands out as lacking in terms of production value. Some have commented on the musical score having no set identity, and I can see the point. It jumps from recycled score material to modern club music and all around, but that didn't detract anything for me much at all. I noticed it, and in that sense it did draw me out of the film from time to time
just not as much as other elements.
With Kick-Ass 2, my brain is wracked by how many missed opportunities there were. Every plot element was essential, however, the execution of each one was quite restrained. Where tension could've been created by overlapping elements and allowing the film to break its own barriers, the viewer got nothing but contained subplots in almost a chained sequence. For instance, Mindy was socially awkward, but who she was as Hit-Girl never fully collided with her at-school personality. She acts out some, but her identity as a hero is all too easily restrained when she's focused on high school social elements.
Beyond that, there was a lot of melodrama, especially in the first ½ of the movie. The 2nd half is where the plot finally got intense. Alas, it failed to stun me in many instances. The action scenes were great, but I never felt in fear for the lives of the absolutely main characters. Only add-ins went the way of the dodo, which made their roles all too limited. That sense of peril that can truly bring a film to life simply wasn't there.
In the end, the character development fell flat. It was a regaining of their identities, but the characters never grew. Any realizations had were smacked in the face of the audience. Ultimately, what the film needed was more fitting attitude with itself. The seriousness was too present. If the movie had the mindset of letting itself cut loose and be silly once in a while, going directions it could just for the pure fun of it, the serious moments would've been miles more impactful and left a more satisfied feeling to be had. Rather, it was the rigamarole of good versus evil getting drawn out. The character of Kick-Ass was rarely conflicted until the last 1/3 of the movie, as were most all the others.
What's stranger is rather than ramping up the stakes physically in a logical manner, the main characters were able to take less of a beating than one would expect (in some scenes) to create a false sense of urgency, and that simply made the style contrite. In energetic scenarios, the good guys were essentially invincible. More dramatic scenes made the characters weaker for the sake of plot convenience. In the end, the medley was difficult to digest.
To summarize, all I have to say is opportunities were missed. The sequences, each scene as an individual entity, were terrific. The combination of it all didn't leave me itching for more, but wanting more from what I'd just witnessed. The balance needed wasn't there. A re- edit would be fine by me.
Alas, I don't regret seeing the film. In fact, a lot of content was crammed into the hour and forty-three minutes it had. So many sequences were chained together a second viewing may be in line down the road for the sake of digesting them further. If a third picture came out, I'd still watch it. The plot has potential galore and even if this film didn't act on it, there's more than enough buildup to create a wild and crazy third movie.
In the word's of the colonel, "Try and have fun with it. Otherwise, what's the point?"
Violence and use of rough language brings up same elements as the first movie. It can be really funny. Even repeating some of the first movie it separates nicely from other movies of they kind. Brutality and darkness can shock viewer even if you have seen the first movie. This movie has a unique way to play motions in comedy. There is also lot of scenes u can't be prepared for. How many times you stop to think what just happened? Ending is the only part that i did not like so much and i'we had this spider-man theme in my head too many times. Thats why i don't give 10. From start to finish really entertaining and most off all super funny.
Your ass is constantly braced in readiness and hope, but it remains un-kicked.
It takes place in New York, like in the first film, but is filmed in Toronto, Canada. When Colonel Stars and Stripes is beheaded in the comic, his head is replaced by his dog's. The Motherfucker gets eaten by a shark but lives, but in the comic he falls off a building instead (and also lives). In the movie Mindy (Hit Girl) runs away from town, instead of getting arrested like in the comic. Motherfucker doesn't kill his mom in the comic, and, instead of attempting to rape Night Bitch then beating her up, the Motherfucker actually rapes Katie and puts her into a coma. Also in the comics, the Motherfucker kills neighbourhood children and cops, but in the movie he only kills the cops. In April 2012, while Kick-Ass 2 was still in pre-production Mark Millar stated that a third film was also planned. In June 2013, however, he revealed that it was not confirmed and would be dependent on how successful the second film was. Later the same month he further elaborated that if it went ahead, the third film would be the final installment: "Kick-Ass 3 is going to be the last one... I told Universal this and they asked me, What does that mean? I said, It means that this is where it all ends. They said, Do they all die at the end? I said, Maybe because this is a realistic superhero story... if someone doesn't have a bullet proof vest like Superman, and doesn't have Batmans millions, then eventually he is going to turn around the wrong corner and get his head kicked in or get shot in the face. So Kick-Ass needs to reflect that. There has to be something dramatic at the end; he cannot do this for the rest of his life."
Moretz has shown interest in returning for a third installment and would also be interested in exploring Hit-Girl's dark side: "I want to see something we haven't seen yet. Now we've seen who Mindy is, now we've seen who Hit-Girl is, I think we need to meld the characters together and have Mindy become Hit-Girl and Hit-Girl become Mindy. Maybe her natural hair has a streak of purple in it, maybe she really does go kind of crazy and go a bit darker since she lost her father." She also added, "I would only do the third one if it was logical. It needs to be a good script and a director, probably Matthew (Vaughn). The third film needs to fully wrap up the series and has to be a good note to end on."
On 30 August 2013, Millar stated that the film is "in the pipeline". In May 2014, while at a press junket for Godzilla, Taylor-Johnson stated he is still up for a third film but he is not contracted for it and there are no plans for one currently. In the same month, Christopher Mintz-Plasse revealed he had not heard anything but expressed doubt that a third film would happen due to the second installment's disappointing box office performance.
In June 2014, Chloë Grace Moretz echoed her co-stars' sentiments when asked about Kick-Ass 3, stating that "I hope, I wish. That'd be fun. That'd be great. I doubt it but I would love it". She also cited the second film's lower box office gross as the key obstacle to the third chapter being produced and suggested file sharing was a factor: "The hard thing is if fans want a third movie, theyve got to go buy the ticket to go see the movie. It was like the second most pirated movie of the year, so if you want a movie to be made into a second, a third, a fourth and a fifth, go buy a ticket. Don't pirate it." In August 2014, Moretz reiterated her previous statements and said "sadly, I think I'm done with [Hit-Girl]". In February 2015, Matthew Vaughn who directed the first film, spoke optimistically about a "Hit-Girl" prequel. He stated "If that happens, Im pretty sure I can persuade Aaron and Chloe to come back and finish the story of Kick-Ass." On 17 June 2015, Vaughn stated in an answer to Yahoo that he is working on a prequel on how Hit-Girl and Big Daddy became superheroes and plans to make Kick-Ass 3 after.
