The Journey Down trilogy is truly amazing adventure game and Chapter Three is the best among them, if you liked the prequel, you should play Chapter Three now.
If you haven't played the prequel, but like adventure game with rich story and world creation, then you should grab the trilogy now.. Way too easy. I loved first and second chapter, but this one was short and simple. Sadly.. This series is an absolute delight.
Everything about it shows how much care has been put into the game.
The music is beautiful. At least 98% of the voice acting is on point and gives a lot of character to every NPC and, most importantly, the player character Bwana.
These characters, by the way, are all likeable and entertaining, which is coming from someone who often gets fed up with "funny" characters in games, and quickly. Not here though, I enjoyed the humour immensely and all the way through to the end of Chapter 3.
Probably the most memorable and unique thing about The Journey Down is the art. Characters are stylized in a very interesting way which also makes them easily recognizable and memorable. Environments are gorgeous and apparently handpainted, which makes them even more impressive; plus there are many very different places to visit and look at, from industrial city to swamp to savannah and more.
You know the developers did something very right when you get excited about each new location you're about to visit. The attention to detail in most of the backgrounds is simply impressive; some of them almost managed to revive a sense of childlike wonder that, sadly, cynical adult me isn't capable of experiencing anymore. ... Just kidding, this is exactly what I felt sometimes.
Now of course this is a game, so the gameplay is important. TJD is a point & click, so naturally your objective everywhere you go is to pick up everything that isn't nailed down - sometimes even things that are nailed down after freeing them from their nail situation - and combine them, either with other items or with the environment, or you might have to throw them at pesky NPCs to get them out of the way.
The puzzles aren't very difficult and don't much suffer from P&C obscurity. There were only few cases where I had to stop and think a little longer. Your mileage may vary, but if you're looking for a super-challenging puzzle game, this might not be the one. You should play it either way because it's fun. Everyone should like fun!
One of the best parts for me in Chapter 3 was that the ending did not disappoint, which is the case in too many games. Here it was a fun and satisfying climax and conclusion to everything that has happened before.
As for the plot, that takes a couple of turns I was not expecting. It might seem like a generic conspiracy plot at first, but the way it plays out and the setting make it so much more interesting than that. There are no big twists or anything, but the world SkyGoblin have come up with provides some surprising moments and locations.
Overall it took me maybe 6-8 hours to complete all three chapters so it doesn't overstay its welcome either.
Obviously I very much recommend The Journey Down, even at full price, though all three chapters go on sale frequently if you'd rather wait.. Fun puzzles, great characters, killer art and soundtrack.. Point and click game with decent humour but no dumb humour. <- May wary because of induvidual preferences.
Very good cut scenes for a point and click game.
Another point is that the world is very original.
The game also give realistic view that some big companies got to much power at the expense of users . Chapter three is a fitting end to the trilogy. If you liked the first two, you'll like this one. Art, music, and voice acting remain just as strong.
The puzzles seemed much easier this time around––I was never stuck for more than fifteen minutes or so. This might be a good thing as inventory-based puzzle games can be illogical. While there were some clearly "absurd" solutions, it was always clear what to do. For the third game, it would have been nice to have had some harder non-inventory based puzzles. (For the record, I did have to look up some hints for both the first two chapters).
The story is satisfying yet holds no real surprises. Although everything wraps up nicely (in a climax not unlike a certain Star Trek movie, but the tone is far more appropriate here) it felt a bit rushed. It's just as long as the previous chapters, but there are so many story beats to cover that it feels at times that we're playing an abridged version of the storyline. I would have liked to have seen a bit more interaction and more dialog options among some of the heroes and villains in the endgame.
My biggest complaint is in the Underland itself: for all the buildup in the first two parts, it was a bit too generic-paradisey. I enjoy The Journey Down for its unique setting and characters, but the Underland itself didn't live up to the rest of the game, and it was a much more minor part of this chapter than I thought it was going to be.
I hope I'm not making the story sound worse than it it is. They are really minor issues all things considered, and TLJ remains my favorite of the new Lucas-style adventures that we've seen in the past few years. I certainly enjoyed it more than, say, Broken Age (and it felt much more complete than that game). I hope many people buy it so SkyGoblin can do something much more substantial next time around.
