In a world where, unbeknownst to the public, all famous pulp fiction heroes are real, one of them, Jake Speed, agrees to help desperate Margaret Winston save her sister from sadistic white slaver Sid, who's operating in Africa.
While vacationing in Paris with some friends, young carefree student Maureen Winston is abducted in broad daylight by a gang of white slavers. Her family is desperate, especially her guilt-ridden older sister Margaret, who was the one who talked Maureen into taking a trip to see Europe. Despite some comforting words, the State Department has no idea where the girl is, which leaves her desperate family out of options. However, Grandpa Winston suggests that they should turn to pulp heroes like Remo Williams (aka The Destroyer), Mack Bolan (aka The Executioner) or Jake Speed (a character made up for the movie) for help. Everyone believes it's just dementia talking until Margaret's best friend Wendy visits her the next day and finds a message addressed to Margaret under the door. The note only says that if Margaret wants to see her sister again, she should go to a sleazy bar near the peer. Driven by guilt, she does so and meets Jake Speed's assistant Desmond Floyd there. He explains that Jake is willing to take her case for free. Jake then finally shows up, but he seems like he's not all there. He explains to Margaret that her sister is being held by Sid, a sadistic murderous British white slaver and crime lord, who operates from a (fictional) African country, where a full blown armed rebellion is in progress. He also explains that all pulp fiction heroes are actually real (including Doc Savage) and that their novels are all based on their wild real life adventures. Margaret buys this and agrees to travel there with Jake and Desmond. However, once there, she's attacked, almost blown up and almost sold into slavery herself by Jake, all as part of his plan which he neglected to explain to her. She eventually begins to suspect that there's something wrong with Jake and his friend and runs away. She finds her way to a consulate that's being evacuated due to heavy fighting. The consul explains that Jake and his friend are two infamous benign fraudsters, who actually believe that they are two pulp fiction heroes. However, when he asks Margaret to lead him to the barn where the two are religiously waiting for her return, it becomes perfectly clear that Jake, although not exactly at his best, is very much who he says he is - but the consul is not. Jake and Margaret are captured and taken at gunpoint to Jake's arch-nemesis Sid's villa, where Margaret's sister is being held as well. Can the good guys win, even in the 80s?
Jake Speed is a film that attracted a minor cult following in the mid 1980s in the VHS market. It tanked in the US box office and the publicity for the film compared Jake Speed with James Bond with a straight face!

This laughably bad B film starts with two young women being chased in Paris who are then taken to Africa by white slave traders, a ring operated by Sid (John Hurt.)

The sister of one of the kidnapped girls Margaret (Karen Kopins) gets into contact with pulp fiction hero Jake Speed (Wayne Crawford) to rescue her sister. They head off to an African country in the midst of a civil war. Margaret knows nothing about Speed and he seems to act more like a slacker with no plan leaving Margaret dubious about him.

This is a low budget movie despite some location shooting in several countries. It is a sub standard Romancing the Stone rip off. For a comedy action adventure, it has no action or humour. The pace of the film is in slow motion.

Crawford lacks any charisma and Hurt camps it up for a pay cheque. I think Hurt bought a farm in Kenya with the money. Don't let the name of this film deceive you, In reality Jake Speed the character is quite possibly the laziest action hero ever known to film. When Jake Speed is not saving virgin girls from evil madmen, which he is often not, he's seriously relaxing. Perhaps this adds to his charm, but in my opinion an action hero is not suppose to "chill out" whenever he gets the chance. Furthermore, unlike other daring heros who usually have an impressive list of talents, this man has none, unless of course you call sleeping a talent. Anyhow, this movie is basically worthless, the writing is sub par and the action, when there is some, is very lame. (The machine guns on the jeep weren't bad, but that's about it) So, if you're in the mood to watch a movie that is a cure for insomnia, then this piece is perfect for you - It has a hero that not only puts himself to sleep, but also his audience.
