About This Game

The bright dancing lights of the aurora illuminates the sky of Terra Feminarum every night. However, recently the northern lights have strangely become restless and weaken. Three the most powerful shamans of the “Land of Women” are willing to investigate the matter. The road to the Pohjola shall be traveled once more.



Terra Feminarum is a Finnish mythology themed Japanese style manic shoot ’em up. The characters and the story are based on Finnish mythology. The gameplay and the art style are both highly inspired by Japanese danmaku shooters.

I purchased the game for its Kalevala setting, and it turns out quite - not bad.

Personally I would say this game is influenced by the Touhou series to a certain extent, I mean the part where boss have separate 'spells' each with a name and such. I also acknowledge that Cave's shmups are popular in Finland for whatever reason, so they might be one of the inspirations as well.

The bullet patterns are fine, no serious problems, no outrageous innovations. Graphics give a very indie feeling, which is not really a bad thing. For me, the two forementioned aspects are of average / mediocre quality. Seen better, seen worse, that's it.
What makes me think the game really worth more than the 100 yen labelled price should be the music. Accordions and synth-rock give a very, very, almost stereotypical 'Finnish' feeling. Not to mention some of the traditional tune remixes.

I don't really enjoy widescreen vertical shooter, and this one, unfortunately, as well. It's just a problem of habits and familiarity though.
Also, speaking of problems, I experienced some weird lags in input as well as in display. I would suggest that these were caused by some engine / danmaku logic flaws. Fixes will be appreciated if possible.

Overall 7.5/10, considering the very low price.. Most bullet hell shoot em ups on steam are plagued by either technical issues (such as very limited resolution options) or overly nostalgic design decisions (like having arcade as the only playable mode).
This game suffers from neither of those problems while also having the most appealing visual style I have seen in a shoot em up and keeping the core gameplay elements of a classic bullet hell shooter intact.

The only thing I severely dislike about the game so far is, that in story mode the final stage can only be accessed by completing all challenges in all previous stages. If you want to move up a difficulty, you would also have to repeat the whole process. I'm not a fan of gating endgame content in general, especially if it feels this artificial and forced. If someone has played up to the end of the game, why would you deny him or her the final chapter? Every other chapter is unlocked by beating the previous chapter, why not the final one too? If you really do want to gate it, at least make it interesting! This almost made me not write a review or even write a negative one, because I think that is a ridiculously bad idea that really rubbed me the wrong way, but at the end of the day, the rest of the game is very good so I still think you should give it a try.
. Solid SHMUP with a nice soundtrack and a nice art style. Play as a smug DFC loli, Xena the Warrior Titcow, or not!Holo and go beat up other scantily-clad women in your investigation of the Northern Lights fading.. Touhou game set in the nordic setting!
10/10. Bullet hell, waifus, music: everything is there. It even has actual key config (suck it ZUN).
Game has upgrade system that allows hardcore people finish it "as is" AND more casual auditory to grind abit for easier experience (you get bonuses after finishing levels and then some if you do achievements that make your character stronger).

Game needs some minor polish but it 100% WORTH BUYING.. Terra Feminarum is hands down the most beautiful Shmup I have ever experienced; the colors, background drowing and the music are amazing.
I really like the story mode that allows you to :
- Start to play on the level following the last one you cleared,
- Getting back to the level you cleared to get achievements in order to get much needed improvements to your character (extra life, extra power)
This is really cool to do the level you just cleared and getting those achievements, it makes you feel that you really improved at the game.
Ok I said the improvements are much needed cause, and that will be my only slightly cons with the game, is that even on the lowest difficulty it's pretty damn hard :P At least it makes me keep playing it over and over coz I really want to see what cool arts await me on the next level.
I wholeheartedly recommend this game and also getting the OST.
