Got this game in Humble Bundle's Sekai Project. Well worth its price here though (discount or not). Overall: This is the first visual novel I have played. And honestly, it has a better story then all the other games I have ever played. This surprised me. The long Campaign is over 50 hours with 30 hours of content. Player choice does affect the world significantly, as this has 39 endings, mostly bad. Sometimes, in order to make the right choice the main character needed to have low confidence in himself, which is something I have personally never seen in any video game before. Solid background score and sound design. Routes: Both routes are very good (Root A and Root B) and there is some content generated based on what endings you get. Root B may seem boring, but picks up steam significantly in the last third of the game, and its finale (just pre and post credits) will explain the events in the start of Root A. Characters: 8 of the 9 characters you interact with are amazing with great voice acting backing up a very rich backstory, 1 (lets call them: bonde ninja) is pretty annoying. Both protagonists are very well developed as well. Lore: Possibly has the least plot holes I have seen in any work. I am not joking, on my first playthrough, I noticed and predicted plot events based on information I got, while people may say that this makes the game "predictable", no its not, its that nothing feels like anpull, and you feel rewarded when you see your prediction become true or realize that you misunderstood that information(remember this game allows the main character to have low confidence in his abilities). World of Root Double has solid foundations and does not rely on Deus ex Machina.. One of few masterpieces in the genres of mystery, thriller, life-and-death drama. Absolutely amazing story with unexpected and unpredictable twists and turns; well written characters each with their own personalities, complicated pasts and circumstances; amazing soundtrack and outstanding brilliant voice acting; cool and unusual choice system only adds to all the pluses; being very very long reading experience is a huge plus as well. Personally I don't see any cons/minuses in this visual novel.. I had a bit of mixed feelings about this game. I found Route B to be super boring, but by the time I got to A it was really exciting! To me the mysteries in the game were more than worth playing through to figure out. Definitely worth full price because of how many hours you will spend playing! I bought it on sale though. The enneagram wasn't very intuitive but you get the hang of it after awhile. All in all a very good sci-fi mystery game that I'd go so far as to class with Steins;Gate.. I got this with the Sekai Project Humble Bundle. This game stood out, since it wasn't about catgirls. Let me just say this has been one of my favorite visual novels. On the surface, a lot of plot elements seem pretty standard and predictable. This VN impressed me by having a lot of layers of twists and turns. I'll give you an example, over the course of this VN and its routes. I went from suspicious, to trusting, to absoluting hating a certain character, only to end up trusting them all over again, with a very high opinion of them. The complexity keeps things interesting despite the long run time. The only negative, is that the second path, route B, does drag a little with exposition. But that might be because of how intense and quick the first route feels. I couldn't put this game down, and logged my 37 hours (at time of review) in less than a week (and I work full time).. One of the best VNs on steam, if your a fan of the Infinity series this game has the same Director. the game has a lots of well timed plot twists and dramatic reveals. The ending is good and ties up loose ends but left me a little dissapointed after the "mindskrews" of his previous works. oh and play route After first.. One of the best Visual Novels that you can play on Steam at the moment. One that excels at characterization, at the end of the journey you'll feel empathy for almost all the characters of the game, many tragic moments that have a powerful effect on you, because of the affection you've gained for them during the journey. They have all a deep background story and motivations for all the actions they'll take during the VN. It's not a VN about the plot twists and the end result, it's about the journey you have with the characters and the world. Don't get me wrong, it has some really good plot twists and intriguing mysteries, but it's not the main focus and strongest point of the VN. I liked all of Nakazawas Visual Novels, but they are really different and not comparable, they have elements in common but that's it, I/O for example did not have as much focus on the characters as in Root Double, but the worldbuilding was even more believable, and the overall plot really complex and it didn't gave you the answers at the end whereas Root Double answers all your questions! Compared to Remember11 it's even more different, Route A with more focus on tension and pacing of the story is the most similar section you'll find in Root Double.. Length : About 65 hours So, as stated just above, it's a very long VN. And it's fully voiced by talented people. The overall quality is very good and the music was nice too. While reading it, the setting and the ambience kinda reminded me of Ever 17. With more fire and less water. The story is an adventure/mystery kind and it's separated into four sections plus a bonus one (After, Before, Current, Double and Extend Episode). Only two episodes are available at first, and the others get unlocked one by one once you finish those. I began with After first, then jumped to Before but I'm not sure I would forcefully recommend on doing the same. Let me explain : After is an adventure-mystery story following a rescue worker named Kasasagi Watase who's dispatched on a disaster scene and suffers a loss of memory due to some event. You more or less begin the game just after that and thus go into the story while being completely blind, both the protagonist and you the reader. Before on the other hand is slice of life-ish and shows the days before the disaster from the point of view of Tenkawa Natsuhiko, a high-schooler, and his close friends. It's slow and peaceful compared to After and introduces the characters from the other group of survivors whom you don't really meet during the first episode. So, reading After, then Before is the intended order but the very nature of Before slows down greatly the rythm of the story and can make the reading a bit painful after the fast-paced non-stop action of the last part of After that ends on a cliffhanger. And also, since Before is all about people you know nothing about since you only got a glimpse of them during After, you're not compelled to know about them at this point. On the other hand, going Before -> After would spoil lots of things in After, plus making the amnesia gimmick lose its shine since it would be reduced to a plot point rather than a way to introduce the reader into the story but would make the pacing of the story a whole lot better and painless. So I still recommend the order in which it's presented to you but it can be a hurdle for some people; I think I'm an avid reader but even for me, it took me multiple sessions to go through Before. I couldn't read it in just two sessions like I did for After. Really, that's the greatest negative point of this VN. After that, you get the Current episode. Then the Double. It's hard to talk about them without spoilers but to summarize, Current is the joint adventure of Kasasagi and Tenkawa (it's a bit on the short side) and Double is the second half of the game, with all the revelations, climaxes and endings where everything comes together. On a side note, it took me 44 hours to reach what felt like the real opening. What about the Extend Episode ? It's a bonus containing some recaps of things you already read, with additionnal scenes. It's unlocked after witnessing the true ending and it's also the very last piece of the puzzle. So, do I recommend it ? Yes. Very much so.. Finished Root A and in the middle of Root B right now and I'm loving it so far. I definitely prefered Root A (intense suspenseful mystery game) to Root B (Slice of life with segments of suspense) from what I've seen so far but together they make for a good game.. Very well made visual novel with captivating story full of surprises, great character development as well as nice visuals and audio. Definitely recommended to all VN readers. Didn't really like the decision to transfer the RAM system to Xtend episodes..
