About This Game

Grand Prize Winner of the 2014 Indie Game Maker contest.

Magic is a curse. A plague upon the world and those that live in it. Those that are born with this curse unwittingly sap the mana from the earth they stand in. In order to prevent these abominations from draining away the world's lifeblood, they are locked away in a castle in an isolated dimension. It is in this castle that the cursed are to remain, removed from society so that their magic does not harm normal people. They are to be kept here for the rest of their miserable lives.
At least, that's the way it should have been...

Suddenly, a loud crash is heard. A young girl, kept apart from the rest of the castle, looks up from the ground. The magical barrier that prevented her escape slowly dissipates. Standing up, she pushes open the gate and finds her first taste of freedom. Guide her as she teams up with a renegade mage boy to search for the truth behind the castle, her unique magic, and a way to escape.

I thought overall, this game was pretty good.

Pros:
1. The battle system rocks. How it works is that each character can use every element spell, but they have innate abilities that only that person can use to power up the other's spells. So one person casts their power up (like making it more powerful or hit all enemies) and then the other casts the damage spell. It makes the characters actually work together and need each other whereas in most RPGs, every character does their own thing.

2. The music fits with the theme of the game (It's an eerie castle that you have to explore).

3. The characters have a good chemistry. Even though the main character doesn't talk, her friend still communicates with her and during their short time together, forms a love relationship that works. In the outside world, each character has their own abilities (The main character can play music to unlock doors and her friend can jump gaps) which helps develop their personalities.

Cons:
1. The game is short (I finished it in 2 hours).

2. The two endings that aren't the "good" ending seem pointless because there is no substance to them (they just have the respective character walk off the screen with "ending 2 or 3" flashing).

3. The game is a little easy.

I enjoyed it and I'd recommend it for people who like RPGs.
. It's rare that I get to condemn an rpgmaker title for being uninteresting instead of bad, but this one fits the bill.

Remnants of Isolation is a linear dungeon-crawl with a narrative about loneliness and, of course, isolation. The central conflict is over whether or not people can find meaning in each other and deal with these problems and, less importantly, whether folks can escape a giant magical dungeon full of well-rendered megabosses.

The art in RoI is really quite good, provided you limit your definition of "art" to strictly the character portraits and the monsters you encounter in battle. The tileset seems to be largely stock, and looks about as interesting as a slug on pavement.

Music is overall better, with what seems to be a custom soundtrack and decent stock effects. However, the Chrono Trigger victory noise is the soundbite that ends every battle, and I have no idea how that snuck into the finished copy. I'm realtively confident that it still belongs to Squeenix, although maybe it has somehow been opened up for indie developers to use.

Combat is nearly engaging. Your party consists of two characters, each of which has spells and also abilities that amp spells used on the same turn. So, you'll have one character attack with an ability that makes the other character's spell hit all monsters, and then you'll cast fire for AoE damage. Battles still feel grindy, but there's at least a little more substance than mashing your strongest abilities to win.

In summary, this isn't an abominous travesty like Data Hacker is. It's not a sleeper hit like City of Chains or an actual quality title either. It's just okay. Not bad for a first effort on steam, but not particularly worth your time either, even if it is priced accordingly for the content it delivers.. A short little gem. After you realize what you should do with the battle system the combats are no problem.
Overall there are 5 small dungeons and a few boss fights. Also the game has 3 possible endings, no bugs
and it costs next to nothing.. A short but fun RPG. The graphics are colourful, the music is nice!
You have two main characters and the girl is silent. She gives enough expression to still make the conversations interactive. A lot of the background story is unfolded by finding notes around the castle.
The battle system is very neat. You have to use the characters together. One to power up and the other to use a spell. Combining different of their abilities causes unique effects. So you have to strategize wisely.
A very interesting game so definitely recommended!. Pretty bland. uses alot of stock RPG maker parts, a generic "silent protagonist" to save time, and you know. lack of writing skills.

actual in game dialogue is like 50 total lines.
actul story dosent exist. hits you with the egeneric "main character is the cause of this" literally immediately after talking about a "heart of the castle" or whatever.

has some specially drawn scenes, like 3 or 4 of them. but they ALL look terrible. my favorite is how the final boss gets his own little intro image. and it looks absolutely nothing like his in game sprite.

literally copies the main castle map from The Fairy, The Succubus, and The Abyss. dosent even TRY to rearange it any.

gameplay is okay, but to grind monsters(which youll never need to do since every enemy can be killed in at most, 2 hits. final boss included.) you have to leave the dugeon and return. game has no balance whatsoever, as soon asyou get tripple triad or whatever the hell its called, its GG. you win.

its an okay rpg maker generic low effort game. for free. ITS NOT WORTH PAYING FOR. THIS ISNT EVEN UP TO LAXIUS POWER STANDARDS.. A short little gem. After you realize what you should do with the battle system the combats are no problem.
Overall there are 5 small dungeons and a few boss fights. Also the game has 3 possible endings, no bugs
and it costs next to nothing.. Considering the garbage RPG Maker games I've had to put up with in the past, I can really appreciate a game like Remnants of Isolation<\/i> which doesn't oversell itself, doesn't try to stretch itself too far from base with gimmicks, doesn't overstay its welcome, and is priced to make you feel like you're getting a great deal. It's a short, sweet RPG that's solid enough on all fronts to keep interest for exactly the two hours (1 hour, 30 minutes if you want the achievement) that it takes to finish.

Patch 1.1 - Controllers welcome!:
I planned on adding a new area to the early game in this patch but I decided to split it up into a quality of life patch and a content patch. I felt it was more important to get usability and balance changes out quickly. Here's what's inside:

  • Support for XInput controllers has been implemented. You can activate controller mode by pressing the A button. Keyboard/mouse control can be reactivated by pressing any key on the keyboard. The controller layout can be found in the Help section on the title screen.
  • You can now switch between fullscreen and windowed mode from the options menu. You can adjust the window's size with the Page Up and Page Down keys.
  • Outfit changes:
    • Robe & Hat: now starts with Spell Power upgrade
    • Chainmail Bikini: ability cooldown lowered, spear no longer slows movement
    • Cyberpunk Gear: ability cooldown lowered
  • Floor size in some areas has been adjusted slightly downwards
  • Enemy count has been lowered by roughly 3 per floor and the XP curve has been adjusted accordingly
. Patch 1.31:
Just a few small changes:
  • You now receive a slight speed boost after killing a floor's last enemy
  • Outfit changes:
    • Ranger's Garb: going into stealth now stops you from firing for a moment so that you don't have to worry about letting go of the fire button beforehand
    • Pumpkinour: ability icon tweaked so that it doesn't overlap the mana bar
. Patch 1.21 - Additional Changes:
Just two quick changes:
  • Camera implementation for controller mode has been changed. The maximum camera distance has been lowered for non-boss floors, where it's more likely that you will need to aim in the opposite direction quickly, and will stay the same as it was previously on boss floors, where you're typically tracking a single target from as far away as you can. This should make controller aiming on non-boss floors feel smoother.
  • Changed Sharpshooter Suit's description to reflect the previous patch's changes
. Patch 1.64:
  • Vsync implementation has been improved
. Patch 1.62:
Just a tiny fix.
  • Mouse is now properly locked in fullscreen mode
In more exciting news, I've been working on a followup to Witchinour for a while and it's nearing the point where I feel it's ready to be properly revealed. If you follow me on Twitter you've seen little clips of it but in the past weeks the game has become more and more playable. I don't have an exact timeline for anything but I'll be sure to post an update here when it's ready.
