Samuel Pierret (Gilles Lellouche) is a nurse who saves the wrong guy -- a thief (Roschdy Zem) whose henchmen take Samuel's pregnant wife (Elena Anaya) hostage to force him to spring their boss from the hospital. A race through the subways and streets of Paris ensues, and the body count rises. Can Samuel evade the cops and the criminal underground and deliver his beloved to safety?
Samuel, a male nurse, saves the life of a thief whose henchmen take Samuel's wife hostage and force him to spring their boss.
At barely 80 minutes this film covers a lot of ground very quickly and does so in an effective and engaging manner. The plot sees an innocent man drawn into murder and corruption when his wife is kidnapped in order to force him to free someone being held in police custody in a hospital. From here it moves with an urgent pace that works very well and keeps you engaged. The plot is not perfect but it keeps moving and keeps things very taut, so you go with it from start to finish.

The strength of the film is this urgency and sense of real peril throughout; it works with the pace of delivery to makes the telling very tight and produce several tense sequences which flow together well. Lellouche is good in the lead as his desperation is played well – at no point does he transform into an action hero but rather stays in character. Zem is simpler as a delivery but his tough presence works well. Anaya does "peril" well in her short time and the various villains and police are good support. Generally everyone is convincing and the film uses this well to help build the tension.

A Bout Portant is a simple film that does what it does and does it well. It hits the ground running and keeps moving till the end. Tight and engaging. Smart action thrillers are rare. Rarer still is a smart action thriller that features a complex yet comprehensible (and credible) plot, characters you care about, and vivid, crisp directing. "Point Blank" is one of these rarities. It utilizes many elements of classic action films—an innocent "good guy" who unwittingly becomes caught up in a dangerous plot, a woman in jeopardy, corrupt cops, and unexpected twists. The film avoids cliché, however, and it moves along at lightning speed (total running time is about 80 minutes). The French setting is an added bonus, and the acting and editing are very well done. Subtract a star if subtitles annoy you.
Point Blank fires nothing but blanks in the end, dealing in increasingly ludicrous plot twists and one fizzle of a finale.
