During a heavy German infantry assault, the Americans are in a headlong retreat where nearly all the soldiers on both sides are killed in a moving firefight through a woods. Saunders is finally left with a green Pvt. Carey to face the three remaining Germans. He runs out of ammunition for his Thompson, and he begins to return fire with his .45 auto pistol. Saunders repeatedly yells for Carey to return fire, but Carey is frozen and is unable to pull the trigger. Saunders makes it back to Carey and quickly empties Carey's M-1. Killing two of the three remaining Germans, Saunders has only the German Sergeant to face, but he and Carey have no more ammo, and Carey tells him that he is unable to kill anyone. Saunders and Carey take refuge in a mine shaft, but the determined German Sergeant pursues them into the mine where they all become trapped in a cave-in. A fallen beam seriously hurts the German who gets pinned under it, but Saunders and Carey are uninjured, take the German's MP-40, and are able to dig their way out. After digging their way out, they are surprised by three more Germans, and Carey finally has to come to grips with the idea of killing another human being as well as the idea of saving the injured German trapped inside if he wants to keep his humanity.
Out of ammo, Saunders is holed up with terrified young Private Carey ('Tommy Sands'): a pacifistic draftee who can't bring himself to fire on their pursuer, a relentless German sergeant.
While retreating the squad from a German attack, only Saunders and the rookie Pvt. Carey survive. They are hunted down by three Germans and Saunders runs out of ammunition. However the yellow Carey freezes and is not able to shoot the enemies. Saunders manages to kill two Germans but having no more ammunition, they flee and seek refuge in a cave. But the relentless German sergeant pursues them into the mine. When the sergeant shoots, there is a cave-in and they are trapped in the cave that is running out of oxygen. Now Saunders and Carey need to dig an exit while the German threatens to shoot them.

"More Than a Soldier" is another great episode of "Combat!" with another realistic story. The attitude of Pvt. Carey can be easily understood since he is a rookie with no combat experience. The twist in the story is also credible. But the lesson of human values given by Saunders to Pvt. Carey is one of the reasons to make this series cult for the fans. My vote is eight.

Title (Brazil): "Mais do que Um Soldado" ("More Than a Soldier") "More Than A Soldier" is a story about a young frightened Private Carey (well played by Tommy Sands) who freezes up under fire and then undergoes a massive character transformation when reality sinks in.

Saunders and the squad are in the process of retreat from a larger German force and are getting the worst of it. The German sergeant (well played by Ron Soble) is relentless with machine gun fire; Private Carey freezes up and cannot return fire. The Sarge pulls a few tricks out of his helmet and he & Carey manage to reach cover in a mine shaft. The German Sergeant follows and soon has them captured. But after awhile the tables turn when a cave in pins the German and frees Saunders & Carey. Reality sinks in for Carey. He realizes he could've avoided all of the trouble if he would have not frozen up.

Shirl Hendryx wrote a fine screenplay; the viewer sees a complete transformation and maturing of Private Carey as a soldier. In Carey's frustration the Sarge always comes through with the right answers for him at the right times. Carey listens and learns. Director McEveety shot a fine original opening sequence involving a great deal of firefight. And Tommy Sands proved to be a great candidate for a lengthy acting career. Close-ups of Private Carey seem to tell the story without words.

The ending 2 sequences show the final transformations and the Sarge is an excellent catalyst without which Carey's growth of character cannot take place.
