The Principality of Wallachia with the capital Bucharest (today a region of Romania) before the Revolution of the year 1848. A couple of secret societies are working to chase away the Prince Gheorge Bibescu from his throne, arms are transported on secret ways, preparing the first popular revolts in Bucharest, as the first act of the Revolution of 1848, which revolution is the first impulse of the later act of the Union of the Wallachia with Moldavien (Romanian United Principalities in 1862, Kingdom of Romania in 1881 and Kingdom of Greater Romania 1918, with Transylvania, Bukovina and Bessarabia)
The "Margelatu" series contains one of those movie moments that made a real impression on me as a child: Margelatu (Piersic) cleaning his famous multiple-barrel pistol with an alcoholic liquor, at a table in a squalid old-Bucharest inn. I'm almost sure that I've seen this in "misterele Bucurestilor", although it might have been "Trandafirul ...", or "Drumul...". Anyway, "Misterele..." is opening with another memorable scene - the fair which gathers a real "freak" collection, starting with the magical dentist that worked in open-air (irressistible performance by Jean Constantin) and ending with the weird witch that could see in the future. Simply entertaining.
the third part of Mărgelatu series reflects same romantic/slang/archaic image about XIX Romanian century. scenes of fight, dangerous liaisons, old characters and new figures, and, special not, army of Strigoaia. politic is mixed with stories about hate and friendship. and the script gives, again, perfect occasion to actors to create pieces of great puzzle in which the western flavor is part of Balkan atmosphere. impressive - music has its noble contribution -, fresco about society and drawing for revolution ingredients, large scenes of action and brilliant Marga Barbu in a role who remains memorable in Romanian cinema , Misterele Bucureștilor is new proof of a form of entertainment under Communist regime. ironic and ham, it is , however, nice.
