A language course is a place where one learns a second language from an accredited institution. Courses in a language course are generally aimed at, for instance, communicative competence. Language learning at such classes are often supplemented by existing knowledge or vocational training of some kind. Language teaching has become the most popular of all international studies and is also taught in many non-English speaking countries.

There are many types of language courses available to students interested in learning how to speak or read the language. The most common ones are ESL or English as a Second Language (ESL) courses and Immersion Language Courses (IMC). Although most of these classes are offered in English, there are others which are offered only in a certain language or even only in certain countries. Most language courses concentrate on teaching students' grammar, vocabulary and reading. They may teach pronunciation or introduce new terms, depending on the program.

Most language courses are designed around a set curriculum, and a prerequisite is a certain level of academic competence. Students are expected to already have taken part in at least one year of college classes and to have completed at least the first two years of high school. Some language courses offer only a limited selection of texts, while others may offer a wider range of texts, some of which might already be in the native language of the student. Some language courses also have their own independent electives, apart from the core curriculum.

The duration of a language course may vary, with some starting after only one or two weeks, while others may last for as long as six months. Instructors often set a daily limit on the number of minutes students should spend on each lesson. Some language instructors encourage independent study, by allowing students to read texts at their own pace and to make mistakes. Others prefer a one-paced approach, and students complete assignments in sets of four, with an added test at the end of each set.

Language instructors often explain their concepts and ideas in simple, clear language, so that students can learn without any need for translation. Students may be expected to listen to audio materials or read passages from a textbook. Many language courses have multimedia presentations, such as listening exercises, recordings of discussions, and movies. Students can earn credits for the purchase of textbooks and other reference materials, as well as for their performance in class.

Some language courses take only a short period of time, such as a few weeks, while others may last as long as six months. It's important to know how long a language course will take, since it can depend on a number of factors, including the scheduling of classes, the number of students in a group, and the skills of the teacher. Instructors can choose to create a self-contained learning experience for students who already know a large amount of English, or they can provide a comprehensive course with several modules. Self-contained programs are usually more flexible, allowing students to move ahead at their own pace.

If the teacher and students don't connect on a personal level, it may be more difficult to hold a conversation, so pre-interpersonal communication is an essential part of learning a language as soon as possible. This includes eye contact, polite conversation, and appropriate body language. For some people, the ability to speak another language is innate, but it may take a lot of work and effort for others to learn this skill. Some children just don't speak English well, even though they may be able to tell you what they are trying to say. It's important to work with children who struggle to communicate in English, and not just with those who speak fluently.

The success of a language course is highly dependent on its delivery. There should be a plan for where students will go, what they will do, and how they will get there. In a language course delivered in a classroom format, the primary delivery model (classroom instructor/lecturer) usually works well. It also allows for a much more interactive experience with many students learning at the same time. In an internet-based language course, it is more feasible for students to interact online using chat rooms, forums, and email. It also makes it easier for teachers to monitor how often students are actually learning and improving.
