With the untimely death of his beloved wife still bitter in his mouth, John Wick, the expert former assassin, receives one final gift from her--a precious keepsake to help John find a new meaning in life now that she is gone. But when the arrogant Russian mob prince, Iosef Tarasov, and his men pay Wick a rather unwelcome visit to rob him of his prized 1969 Mustang and his wife's present, the legendary hitman will be forced to unearth his meticulously concealed identity. Blind with revenge, John will immediately unleash a carefully orchestrated maelstrom of destruction against the sophisticated kingpin, Viggo Tarasov, and his family, who are fully aware of his lethal capacity. Now, only blood can quench the boogeyman's thirst for retribution.
An ex-hitman comes out of retirement to track down the gangsters that killed his dog and took everything from him.
I think the director started from the correct observation that too many revenge movies have very similar premises: the protagonist is revenging his family. The wife and daughter in Death Wish, the unborn baby and a four year coma in Kill Bill, the wife in Memento, the family in Gladiator, etc...

So instead of thinking that there might be a good reason for this family premise thing, our storyteller decides to break the mold and have the protagonist revenge... his puppy. A totally excessive and brutal retaliation in which dozens die, together with the perpetrator and his father.

But then again, on a second thought maybe it's not good to break completely free of this family premise after all... so let's make the puppy be a present from the recently deceased wife. Oh, but maybe the puppy is not enough? Let's have the expensive sports car of the protagonist be also stolen!

There there! Now we're creative, novel, traditional, and have insured that a large audience can clearly empathize with our Keanu Protagonist and cheer at the death of the bad people who did all these horrible things.

Besides this lack of a reason for it's existence, the revenge is well executed, thus 6 stars. Now, this is an action film ! From the beginning ( well, not actually first 10 minutes or so, but....) to the end is full of action, interesting plots and scenes and really keeps you entertained!

I must say that I have not seen in a long time a better action movie! Keanu is perfect in the role! All other actors are too. The story is great. The moving of the film/plot is done perfectly. All those secret society mafia agents living by the rule are great! There is really nothing that you can say is bad about the movie.

The language they use...I thought it was Romanian almost entire film. But when they mentioned the Russian church, I figured out it must be Russian.

Loved the ending of the film. Most of the films have some kind of a bad ending and that can ruin all, but this one is perfect!

My favorite part/scene: when those 'cleaners' come to his house after the first shooting and wrap those dead bodies like mummies ! Man, that was something!

Nine from me. Don't know exactly why it is not ten, but 9.50 would be more exact. Neither surprising or groundbreaking in any particular way, the movie gives us what we want and leaves it at that.
The gold coins are currency among the Assassins. It's not made clear how exactly one earns them or why they don't just use real money. But it can be speculated that you earn a certain amount of coins for certain missions. These coins can be exchanged for services within the assassin industry, such as removing bodies and cleaning up any forensic evidence, purchasing weapons and armor, information, and so on. It can also be assumed they use this form of "in-house" currency to avoid any real money being marked or traced to anyone in the organization. Having a private form of currency also makes it more secure against forgery or anyone outside the organization using it themselves. The characters' discussions about John Wick's history suggest he is the most feared assassin in the criminal underworld, which suggests that few assassins would have the courage to try to take him down. There are some assassins, like Harry, who demonstrate too much admiration and respect for John Wick to want to kill him. Other assassins may have found the $2 million bounty too low for someone like John Wick. Others, like Perkins, while really talented, may also be reckless or arrogant or willing to break the rules (like trying to take John down in the hotel).
