Ben Archer, a club owner and gangster from Marseille, France, returns to L.A. after doing another job for his wheelchair-bound boss and good friend Max. But Ben tells Max that he is tired and wants out of his job with Max's gang. Ben wants to live a normal life with his son Nicholas and wife Cynthia. Cynthia is a social worker for the INS, and she's working to prevent the organized flow of illegal Chinese immigrants into the USA. In a raid on a shipping vessel one night, Cynthia finds a 14-year-old girl named Kim amongst the distraught immigrants, and takes pity on her. Cynthia convinces her cold-blooded boss, INS agent Mac Hoggins, to allow her to take Kim home with her for the night and to meet Tommy Li and Mamma Li, the Chinese foster parents who raised Cynthia. What Cynthia doesn't know is that Kim holds a grave danger to Cynthia and her family. Unknown even to Kim, Kim's father is Sun Quan, a powerful Chinese Triad leader. Sun Quan is the man that Kim saw murder her mother before Kim came to the USA. Sun Quan is obsessed with finding Kim. And he'll stop at nothing to find her. Upon his arrival in L.A., Sun Quan is told by Hoggins that Kim is with Cynthia. As it turns out, Hoggins is helping Sun Quan smuggle heroin into the country, using some of the Chinese immigrants as mules. The next day, while Ben is at work, Cynthia, Tommy, and Mamma Li are brutally murdered at the Li family's restaurant by Sun Quan and his men. Only Kim and Nicholas, who were in the other room, manage to escape and run away to Max's house. When Ben arrives at the restaurant, he sees the men with guns leaving the restaurant, and Ben also sees Andy Wang, a drug dealing partner of Sun Quan. After an exchange of bullets, Ben runs into the restaurant and sees the bodies. Ben is understandably inconsolable over Cynthia's death. Ben is also furious. He wants to find Kim and Nicholas, and make someone pay for the murders of Cynthia, Tommy, and Mamma Li. Ben finds Nicholas at Max's house, and Max and his associates Tony and Raymond are more than willing to help Ben figure out who killed Cynthia. Ben and Tony discover that Andy runs a brothel downtown, so they go to the brothel, where Ben kills Andy by shooting him point-blank in the face -- with a shotgun. Then Ben, Tony, and Raymond kidnap Hoggins and take him to Max. Ben and Max have Raymond use a large power drill to torture Hoggins into confessing that it was Sun Quan who had Cynthia killed, and that Sun Quan is Kim's father. Hoggins also admits that he told Sun Quan where to find Kim. Absolutely livid at Hoggins for causing the murders, Max and Ben have Raymond kill Hoggins by using the drill on Hoggins's head. Sun Quan later has Max and Raymond killed, and has Kim and Nicholas kidnapped. Ben manages to rescue Kim, but the kidnappers escape, with Nicholas as Sun Quan's hostage. Ben and Tony head to the docks to rescue Nicholas. Ben will do whatever it takes to get Nicholas away from Sun Quan. And to do it, Ben will have to leave behind a wake of death on his way to a confrontation with Sun Quan.
In China, the girl Kim witnesses the murder of her mother by her mobster father Sun Quan and escapes to Los Angeles in a vessel with other illegal immigrants. The ship is intercepted by the US Immigration Department, and the social worker Cynthia Archer decides to host Kim at her home with her husband, the bouncer Ben Archer, and their son Nicholas. Sun Quan comes to USA, and with the support of the dirty chief of Lisa, he gets the information where his daughter is and uses the Chinese triad to kill Cynthia and her Chinese stepparents in their restaurant in Chinatown. However, Nicholas and Kim escape from the killers, and Ben calls his friend to revenge the death of his beloved wife.
I've watched a few Damme movies in the past, and never expected much out of any of them. It's all been high flying kicks and slow motion. There have been a few that I've loved, even though they've been "Damme-movies"; The Universal Soldier was fun to watch when I was younger, and Hard Target since it's a Woo movie.

I wasn't expecting to see much martial arts, since Damme is...let's face it...kind of old already. Some of his moves still look good enough for the screen.

As a movie, I liked it. Not one of the best I've seen, but deserves a 7 for all the effort. It never really stopped for too long, and the story seemed to go along fluently. There were a few moments when I had to scratch my head, since the characters weren't introduced as well as I would've liked. As a "second grade" action movie, or a "Damme-movie" it was very nice, and I was pleasantly surprised.

What amazed me though, was Damme's performance. Not as a martial artist, but as an actual actor! I mean... Why hasn't this guy acted this well before? He was very convincing in almost all his scenes, and his range of emotion was much wider than what I've used to seeing from him. I would've loved to have seen some of his earlier work with this much "skill" in acting.

Maybe it's because he can't really kick as high as he used to anymore. :) Anyways, I liked the movie, and I hope he keeps doing these kinds of "real" movies, where he's not just showing off his body and doing high kicks. Oh, and that brings me to a point... There was a sex scene in this movie, much like in the old 80's movies. Perhaps a bit shorter and less graphic, but a what I would call an 80's sex scene anyways. You don't really see those anymore, for a good reason, since they usually break the pace of the movie entirely. This one seemed to fit in the movie though, so it too was a pleasant surprise.

So, if you're going to watch the movie, don't expect much, and you may yet be pleasantly surprised with some of it's elements, such as Damme's acting. :) My 2 euro cents. Van Damme stars in yet another Grade B action movie. The first time I heard about this film was when I saw it on the shelf of my rental place and I was thinking "wow another Van Damme camp-fest" in the style of Derailed or the significantly better, though not great, In Hell. I ended up renting it anyway and it was a pleasant surprise. The story isn't too original. Van Damme's wife brings back a refugee Chinese girl to their home to care for her, but the girl is the daughter of a triad leader and Van Damme's wife is killed along with his in-laws. He goes looking for the girl, his son, the killers. There are also a few twists as the immigrant smuggling operation is not all it seems.

What makes this movie an enjoyable surprise is the quality of it all. Obviously not made on a big budget, but the film doesn't out do itself. It seems consistent throughout and it is obvious that some of the action scenes weren't unnecessarily accentuated for a thrill. For instance when a tanker truck explodes, it just blows up and we see a few angles inter-cut. Some movies in the genre just go too far with that and that brings them down. Next is the direction. I have never heard about Phillippe Martinez before, but he sure knows what he's doing mixing slow moments of film noir with pretty well directed action scenes and that makes for a solid movie. Also, typical Hollywood sappiness is nowhere to be seen.

Last, but not least, is Van Damme's performance. He might be a bit irregular when it comes to good acting, but this is definitely one of his good moments. Stuff like Street Fighter and Derailed being on the other end of the spectrum with their unrehearsed and choppily acted performances.

Van Damme fans take note for he is definitely on the right track if he keeps making movies like this. 7/10
