In 140 AD, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila (Tatum) arrives from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth. Accompanied only by his British slave Esca (Bell), Marcus sets out across Hadrian's Wall into the uncharted highlands of Caledonia - to confront its savage tribes, make peace with his father's memory, and retrieve the lost legion's golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth.
In order to clear his father's name & to restore the honour to his missing Ninth Legion young & ambitious Marcus Aquila accompanied only by his faithful slave Esca sets on a quest for a golden eagle, the symbol of Rome, in a savage land beyond the Wall.
I caught this one yesterday. I really loved it. As a previous reviewer stated it is definitely an ancient story that really is about Amercian history as much as Roman. They delve into the questions of imperialism, and White/ native history. Other reviews cover this better than I do so, I will not go into it.

This film also has the feel of a John Ford western. At times watching it I felt as if I was watching the Searchers with John Wayne.

The basic premise is right out of ancient mythology, the father quest, or saving the father. In this case it is about redeeming the father and family name. The writers must have read their Joseph Campbell.

What I like is that this film as the courage to be ambiguous. Who are the good guys, who are the bad guys? Especially well written is the sidekick character of Esca. Esca is equal to Marcus and and some ways better than he is. It took lots of guts to write him that way.

I also love the unpredictability of the plot. We are never quite sure how things are going resolve themselves. In other words, how will they hero get out of this one? When they do the results are never hooky and are realistic.

I definitely have to give this one 10 out of 10. Adventurous yet realistic. Confronts moral issues without being preachy. Certainly worth it in every way. There are so many things wrong with this, I don't know where to begin. NOBODY looks the least bit Roman (Italian). One character even uses the term "bloody". The hero as a child is VERY blonde. You can see that most of the weapons are VERY dull, not even a pretense of a cutting edge. The hero never shaves and is always clean shaven (even after some days as a captive), he does at the end have about a days growth of beard. He suffers a terrible wound to his leg, but at the end he doesn't even limp. When the slave is given to the hero, he pledges loyalty on his father's knife (which he would never have been allowed to keep). When the hero is wounded at the beginning, he is carried off to be tended where he discovers that he is in the house of his uncle, and he didn't even know that his father had a brother. The slave is way too scrawny to have been a warrior. When the horses are supposed to be too tired to go any farther, they are the least bit lathered. One of the Roman soldiers who survived the original legion, goes off on a politically correct rant about how bad the Romans are to invade and enslave other peoples. Donald Sutherland makes the worst looking Roman nobleman that I have ever seen.

I could go On and ON. Do you like movies about gladiators? Well, lend me your ears: The Eagle will more than gratify your sword-and-sandal cravings.
The Eagle is based on Rosemary Sutcliff's historical adventure novel The Eagle of the Ninth (1954). It is the first of a sequence of novels that are connected through one Roman, and later British, family. The books are labeled as young adult fiction. Yes. The 9th legion (Legio IX Hispana) disappeared around the 2nd century, but in quite unclear conditions (when, where, how). The wall of Hadrian (and others) existed, built to protect from Scottish tribes, but not necessarily due to a big defeat. One of the biggest happened in the first century, circa 9 CE, in Germania (Augustus was Emperor at the time), the famous "clades Variana" or Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, where three complete legions, six cohorts of auxiliary troops and three squadrons of cavalry were slaughtered—15,000 to 20,000 men. The head of Roman forces was Publius Quinctilius Varus; the head of the Germanic alliance Arminius (who was his advisor and planned the trap). Arminius (Armin, Hermann) had lived in Rome as a hostage in his youth, where he had received a Roman military education—knowledge which he used in the battle. For the theatrical release in the US, the aim was to get a PG-13 rating, hoping for a wider audience. The film is rather tame on things like "dirty language", nudity or violence, compared to the HBO TV series Rome, which deals with a similar historical era. But still it seems that there had been need for censorship to achieve the aimed PG-13 rating. The unrated cut, which can be found on the DVD released on June 21st, 2011, in the US, differs only slightly in running time, but several scenes with different material reveal modifications made for the theatrical release. These modified scenes can only be found in the rarely seen battle scenes in the film, which turn out to be a bit more bloody and more violent.
