Intelligence and Security System of China

China is the world's last communist-ruled country. The country has veto power in the UN Security Council and has proclaimed itself a nuclear power. Although censorship and limited civil freedoms still exist in China, residents have seen economic and social restrictions gradually lessen. Poverty is nevertheless pervasive, forcing an influx of people from rural areas to already overcrowded cities.

The Ministry of State Security is China's main intelligence agency (MSS). The Chinese Communist Party, particularly the intelligence community, dominates the Chinese government. Political espionage on Chinese nationals and within China is rampant. The MSS was established in 1983 as a result of government changes that restructured the Chinese intelligence community and revised the objectives of its predecessor agency.
