Helium Rain is a single-player space simulation that places you at the helm of a spacefaring company. Trade resources, buy ships and stations to fulfill contracts ! Dock at stations to buy and sell you wares or upgrade your ship, upgrade your technology to be more efficient and militarize your fleet to prevent piracy.

You will need to master both real-time action and long-term strategy: destroying a freighter has a direct impact on the economy, while declaring war will make your spaceflight environment slightly more hostile...

A world that feels real


Your ships have generators, radiators, weapons, engines, cargo bays or life support systems - they all work together. Every thruster on your ship plays a role. Aim for engines to pin down your enemies, or send them spinning around by destroying power stations. Most ships have more than thirty individual parts ! You can customize the most important parts of your ships - your main engines, attitude control thrusters, weapons and hull colors.

Your competitors are independent factions, companies with the same goal as yours - ruling the system. They will try to undercut you, or even attack you if you become a threat to them. But don't be too quick to destroy them, as war can break the supply of resources you depend on ! Attacking freighters will destroy resources, with the potential to cause an economic crisis.

This is kind of an excellent base for a game set in space. It has the core components of Elite Dangerous, yet, is fresh and new. Newtonian physics are fun and easy to manage, I've seen a few games make a nightmare out of Newtonian implementation. Beyond that, the reviews about it being a space trucking game are essentially true, but the game was released in October and I haven't experienced any stability issues or bugs. Slightly light on the graphics side of things, but even ED evolved graphically, so with dedication and systematic updates and expansion, Helium Rain could become a serious contender in the space sim sector. Time will tell, as long as the devs stay dedicated to their dream and the fans.. Fun space sim. Runs great on Linux.. Hands down the best X3 variant I have encountered of many. The flight system and progression is solid. As soon as the annoyances become apparent there is a way to bypass and advance. Continual learning curve that is moderate and well paced. The economy is very real feeling, with natural ups and downs that you can exploit or engineer. Unlike most X3 variants (and oh god the original) the end game has no latency issues. End game continues to remain challenginging due to unifications of opposing corps and the distribution of resource types. All in all a wonderful game. I look forward to the modding that is being released soon, and am happy to see that development is ongoing.. I can applaud the work that's been done so far, but Helium Rain feels flat out incomplete. With a confusing UX (and don't get me wrong, it's biggest competitor had that problem too) and janky flow for trade, repair, and contract management, this game is a chore to play. I had scenarios where I had thought I had fulfilled the contract (Sell 48 Steel to [Specific Station]) only for the contract to not register it, and for me to have to abandon it, taking a significant reputation hit.

Docking UI elements are inconsistent and frequently get taken over by other elements such as signal sources (which aren't explained to you, but you can find them in time.) Researching Auto-Docking doesn't actually work, requiring a manual docking procedure that I will admit, I enjoyed heavily.

Visually the game looks very utilitarian, and I can accept that for a spacefaring game that is trying to rely on more realistic approaches in a future environment.

There's insufficient communication with the player by the game. Everything absolutely feels fake. It felt as if items were present just to fulfill a robot role. This wasn't a place people lived, this was a place filled by bots to just fill space.

Traveling hides scene loading, and that is incredibly disappointing as the time function for moving forward seems way out of place. To orbit a planet, you select a "sector" and skip days. If you leave the orbit menu while "traveling", you'll get a view of sideways light-bent points of light trying to imply you're going fast around the planet. but if you try to fly in the direction of said movement, you eventually get reset in the "center" of this empty space as you have "left the sector", ultimately destroying any immersion as to the scope of the area you have to play.

Neat idea, but boring and lacks any fleshing out, at least early on. For $14.99 it's okay, but I expect a little more with my titles trying to simulate space to a degree. I need to feel some level of investment for where I am, and this game (even with its tutorial) is very clinical and by the book.. I was dubious when I saw the price, I mean how could anything good be this cheap?

Then I played the game. It is fantastic. It plays smoothly, isn't the buggy horror show that the recent X-series games have been, and scratches that itch perfectly. The game is easy to get into, not too "grindy", and generally is a very pleasant (if slightly addictive) game that I feel is great value for money.

It is nice to play a game for once where I felt that I got a great deal.

We're releasing Helium Rain in Early Access to garner feedback from the community, and decide which features are the ones most needed. Here is our plan :
  • Add joystick, gamepad navigation to the menus. Using only the mouse for navigation in menus is annoying for joystick users. Bug tracker entry[dev.helium-rain.com]
  • Make orbital engines affect the travel speed. Some orbital engines would offer a higher travel speed between sectors. The spaceflight gameplay would be unchanged. Bug tracker entry[dev.helium-rain.com]
  • Introduce fuel consumption. Using orbital engines would draw fuel from your spacecraft's tanks, needing periodic refueling. Bug tracker entry[dev.helium-rain.com]

  • Main story quest. While Helium Rain is a sandbox game at its heart, we are adding story elements to it.

We've released an updated game build on the beta branch of Helium Rain. This new build does not affect the game itself, but brings an updated Unreal Engine version and a new release process on our side. Let's see what changed !

We've released the 1.3.1 hotfix to Helium Rain to account for two new issues.
  • Fix failure to start on Linux devices
  • Fix mod launcher failing to start while not logged on to Steam

We've just released a bugfixing update for Helium Rain. We're aware the game has a number of issues right now and are working hard to remove them as fast as possible. In particular, the end-game balance suffers right now, with very large number of ships and stations.

Here is what has been fixed this week :
  • Fix water not in drop list in the trade route menu
  • Fix fleet selection in the sector menu
  • Fix joystick buttons unusable as bindings
  • Fix joystick bindings not saved
  • Fix horizontal hat of joystick ignored
  • Fix virtual scroll registering as a real key in settings menu

  • Fix spread between Solen and docks
  • Fix Orca cockpit cut at high FOV
  • Fix Atlas freighter having damaged cooling at full health
