About This Game

Break into spaceships!

Fly your pod up to any spaceship in the galaxy and dock with its airlock to sneak inside. From there, you've got to sneak up on the crew, outshoot them in slowmo gunfights, or outthink them with clever gadgets. Take missions to steal loot, assassinate VIPs, or rescue friends.

Take your time!

Get out of impossible situations by pausing at any time and taking as long as you need to figure out a clever plan. You have a wide range of gadgets with clever uses, and you can switch, aim and fire them with no time pressure at all, letting you pull off ridiculously cool tricks without needing twitch skills.

Liberate the galaxy!

All your missions get you closer to liberating new space stations from the empires that control them, and this unlocks new gadgets to buy in your shops, and special challenge characters to play.

Lots more features!
I'm not making GIFs for all these!
I'm not made of GIFs!
I'm not some kind of GIF-golem!

Emergent gameplay!

Use gadgets like teleporters, stealth shields and subverters to invent your own solutions to tricky situations.

Galactic zoom!

Zoom smoothly from a view of the whole galaxy down to your character sneaking up on guards inside the spaceship you're boarding.

Choose your difficulty!

You choose each mission, ranging from trivially easy to nightmarishly hard. There's also a practice mode where you can try items and tactics with no consequences and instant-restart.

Randomly generated missions!

Each one picks a random combination of guard kit, ship layout, and complications like space battles.

Each life is a new character!

Choose between randomly generated characters with different starting kit, and when you die, play as someone new in the same galaxy.

Personal missions!

Every character has one grand heist to work towards: rescue their brother, steal their gun back, get revenge on their partner's killer.

Modular destruction!

Blow up any part of a ship with breach grenades or fuel barrels. Rip a ship in half. Get sucked into space by the vacuum.

Rescue your friends' characters!

If someone on your friends list gets their character captured, and they aren't able to rescue them, maybe you can! You'll sometimes get a character whose personal goal is to rescue a friend's character. If you manage it, you unlock your friend's character to play as! They don't get it back. They had their chance. It's yours now.

Find your friends' items!

When you retire an accomplished character, you can choose one item to pass on. You get to name it, and both your Steam friends and your own future characters have a chance to find these as loot. Equally, you'll come across items your friends have named.

What Heat Signature is not:

We don't want you to buy Heat Signature if it's not for you. We'd always rather have a happy non-customer than an unhappy customer. So here's what it isn't:

-

  • It's not story-driven: there's a backstory to this place and a few conversations with characters, but there's not a story that develops as you play. It's much more about the stories you generate by playing, about how you got out of impossible situation X or pulled off crazy stunt Y.

  • There aren't other careers: You can't mine asteroids. You can't build ships. You can't recruit a crew. You're an infiltrator, you break into spaceships for a living, it's all about that.

  • There are no planets: The whole game takes place in this nebula full of space stations. You can dock at any friendly station and board any hostile ship, but it's not a space exploration game.

  • It's not multiplayer: The friends features mentioned above are fun but they're just sharing content, it's not multiplayer at all and you're never in the same world together.

There are cool games about all those things. This is a cool game about something else! b4d347fde0

Not sure why but I wasn't able to get into this game. With the pause function, IMO it's way too easy and completely lacks the challenge (but perhaps I didn't play long enough).. Just so much fun to play!. I got shot out of the ship I infiltrated.
Proceeded to remote control my ship to pick up my body flying through space.
Piloted my ship to enemy vessel.
Stealth killed the entire crew in 20 seconds and then piloted the ship to safety.

Innovative gameplay, Great writing and fascinating lore. Unfortunately, it suffers from a woeful lack of content; I am left wanting so much more out of this game. If this game had modding support, im sure it would take off like wildfire.

I have a fair number of things to complain about, but nothing in particular breaks the game itself.

  1. The story is interesting, but its only used to tie up the beginning & end of the game- Everything in between is you completing randomly generated missions that have no connection to each other.

  2. After you learn about all the items and how to use them, the game itself becomes alarmingly vapid and repetitive.

  3. You are allowed to repeatedly re-board ships after being thrown out. This drove me to repeatedly bash myself against certain problems/situations until I got it done.

  4. On one of the darker tilesets in particular I frequently found myself mistaking walls as background props. It hasn't gotten me killed, but it has led to some staggeringly awkward moments.

  5. I feel like the AI should be refined- It doesn't feel too lively and its real easy to exploit. Differing actions & tactics alone would work wonders to diversify gameplay & expand the applications of certain items.

  6. Grenades are kind of Overpowered- Enemies will just stare at them until they blow up. Crash/subverter grenades do not cause them to panick or sound the alarm. Grenades can be bounced around corners and thrown infinite distances. They can be used to bypass the effects of a Jammer field effortlessly. They also ignore armor.

  7. With so many alternative ways to bypass armor, I basically never used acid traps. Not even once.

  8. I feel like there should be a trade-off between non-AP & AP weapons- As it stands, non-AP weapons are inferior in just about every way. The Velocity rifle is a good example of said tradeoff- you can't pierce armor, but you can still use it to push enemies out of windows or behind doors waiting to be locked with the crash beam.

  9. Docking & Travel is... Meh? Its kind of clunky, and there is nothing to explore/find out there but the occasion random ships. Its hard to see why its there for any reason other than to act as a set-up for the mechanics of ship sensors/pod damage.

. Imagine throwing everyone into space and then throw yourself into space and now everyone is in space.

Except no one you threw into space is a capture or assassinate target, so they all die and you can't do anything about it.

And they all teleported to the window you broke because they all have glitch packs and your dumb♥♥♥♥♥got the brilliant idea of breaking the window with a super loud grenade.

And you just failed a ghost clause because you killed people. Yay you just got paid 18 money to throw 20 people into space.. This is an absolute marvel of a game and it's criminal how relatively unknown it is.

Possibly the best thing about this game is its arc. For each character you play as, but also for you as a player. At the start, you'll start missions which are way too hard, bumble into enemy ships and get killed mercilessly. Or you'll do easy missions which amount to shooting three guys and getting meagre pay. After ten hours, you'll be teleporting around enemy ships, bypassing security doors, hacking turrets from long range while the count-down ticks by until the ship you're on returns to its own base. You've located your target, but his shields and armour make him essentially invincible. There's only one thing to do, blow a hole in a corridor as he's walking by so that you and him are ejected into space. After that, you have about 20 seconds to use your remote controlled shuttle to pick up yourself and your target.

The core gameplay is essentially Hotline Miami, but with many gadgets and options for stealth and subversion. There's less impetus on twitch gameplay as well, because you have the ability to pause the game. But stating it like that is doing the game a severe disservice.

There is just so much freedom here to find tactics and strategies which suit you as a player. Murderspree or sneaky hacker, close-combat killer or super-fast thief? there's also a ton of emergent storytelling and gameplay. Did you lose a character you invested in due to a miscalculation? Well, with any luck, your character was captured instead of killed and one of your next iterations can go and liberate them from the fortified stronghold where they're held...

This is a masterpiece. One of the very few games that let you feel awesome when your plan comes together. A plan that the game didn't dictate, but you came up with, chose, and implemented. And that feeling is just masterful.. 8/10
