Hancock is a superhero whose ill considered behavior regularly causes damage in the millions. He changes when the person he saves helps him improve his public image.
The powerful superhero John Hancock has become a joke because of his alcoholism and clumsiness. He has also become the most hated man in Los Angeles. Though he has saved many lives, he also destroyed a lot of property, costing the city millions every time he goes into action. When he saves the life of PR expert Ray Embrey from an oncoming train, the executive is thankful and believes he can restore Hancock's image as a true superhero. He brings the anti-hero home for dinner and introduces him to his son Aaron, a big fan, and to his wife, Mary. But for some mysterious reason Mary doesn't want Hancock anywhere near her or her family.
As if we do not have enough superhero movies already with the steady flow of umpteen sequels and still new ones in the works (Ant-Man is due out in 2010, I wonder what will be next Larva-Man?), someone had to create a completely new, original 2008 superhero with no comic book past—Hancock. Even with three strong performances, the film collapses from its' poor start and even worse end finale.

Will Smith has the title role of Hancock, a one-of-a-kind superhuman who works with the LAPD to catch criminals. Well, at least he is supposed to but he has become an alcoholic to deal with his constant mood of depression, and his inebriated antics have caused millions of dollars in damages to Los Angeles City. All of which has caused him to fallout out of the public's favor. Enter Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman) a PR consultant who wants to help him repair his image. Before long, well actually almost immediately, Hancock agrees, and the two form an unlikely duo. The finale comes rather abruptly with one of the most surprising, confusing finale that is what ultimately ruins Hancock.

All three talented stars (Will Smith, Jason Bateman, and Charlize Theron) play their parts entertainingly well, but the story, script, direction, and camera work are what destroy it. The film clocks in at 92 minutes, leaving no time for character development and all the events happen so quickly and abruptly that it feels like an extended TV episodes with gazillion-dollar effects.

Another thing that I found particularly annoying was this constant "shaky", close-ups of who ever was in the scene. Almost as if the studio was trying to save money on set design so they kept the camera in really tight.

Once again the time and effort was put into wowing the audience with the special effects, which are quite remarkable, rather than entertaining with a strong story and developed characters. I would not even recommend it as brainless entertainment because it was rather boring. I still wonder why someone felt the need to go and create ANOTHER superhero movie. Hancock is a superhero whose ill considered behavior regularly causes damage in the millions. He changes when one person he saves helps him improve his public image. Hancock is one of the most underrated superhero films of all time it's basically like a DC movie but instead of 3 movies you have only one the reason why Hancock is such a jerk to everyone is not because he is bad but because he is all alone he thought for years he was the last of his kind but he really wasn't and that is where the drama comes in sure the film has good action and humor but the dramatic element shines it truly shows how heroes are like us and the fact that if they love each they start loosing their powers and become mortal is just a genius idea. Aside the villains and the cgi which is off sometimes Hancock truly shows how heroes are being treated they might save the day but they still have their enemies which is the world for example Superman in BVS. Charlize Theron as Mary is the character that Will Smith was with decades ago and after a horrific attack they split and he doesn't remember a thing and i have to say that scene in the hospital where he got shot or stabbed was amazing they both felt the pain that perfectly shows love and heroism but also the curse of 2 heroes falling in love and as Will starts jumping around away from Mary she comes back to life just epic. Also Jason Bateman was excellent in this film and for once again Peter Berg is just a great director period and because of that i'll give Hancock a 10 out of 10 truly underrated science fiction film.
The real hit of the movie is the hilarious Bateman. His low-key humor makes you wish Hancock could have saved Bateman's short-lived sitcom "Arrested Development." Now that would have been heroic.
Hancock began as a script by screenwriter Vincent Ngo. It was originally titled Tonight, He Comes, in 1996, but it got passed around from director to director until Peter Berg took it over in October of 2006. After several rewrites and a change of title, Hancock finally began filming in July of 2007. Hancock (Will Smith) is not an alien. He's described in the film as one of the last survivors of an ancient race that died out because they had the unfortunate tendency to become mortal when near each other for long. Their origin is never made clear, only hinted. Charlize Theron's character, Mary, mentions that "normal" humans used to call them "gods and angels", for instance, showing that even she is unaware of their true past. Some viewers claim that Mary Embrey (Charlize Theron) is the villain. Others name Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman) as the villain. The most obvious villains are a trio of escaped convicts—Red (Eddie Marsan), Mountain (David Mattey), and Matrix (Maetrix Fitten)—who hold a grudge against Hancock for putting them behind bars. However, part of the subversion of the genre that Hancock engages in is that Hancock is the true villain of the story, as well as the hero—an antihero. The person he truly has to fight is himself; the person who causes all the troubles in his life is himself; the person who perpetuates the cycles of violence in his life is himself. Since the film turns the idea of a Hero on its head, as well as the idea of a Villain, it's very hard to assign the role to any one character. When the people are running away from the tornadoes, suddenly a strange character runs from the left to the right of the screen. The character is about twice as tall as everyone else, and looks like a robot. It's a street performer, on stilts and in costume. A photo of it can be viewed here. A video of it can be viewed here. The convenience store clerk covers the 0 in the price showing $91.10. The telephone emergency number for the United States and Canada (North American Numbering Plan) is 9-1-1. This was his non-vocal way of communicating to Hancock that he needed his help. Red Parker (Eddie Marsan) and at least eight of his inmates escape from prison and go gunning for Hancock, but Hancock is already in the hospital after sustaining several gunshot wounds while attempting to stop a robbery at a liquor store. Mary pays him a visit and explains that the reason he got injured was because, when he and she are close to each other, they start losing their powers. Just as she finishes telling how they were attacked some 80 years ago while walking to the theater to see Frankenstein (1931) (1931), Mountain (David Mattey) and Matrix (Maetrix Fitten) break into Hancock's hospital room and shoot Mary in front of Ray and Aaron. Hancock takes care of the shooters while the doctors try to treat Mary. Red continues to fire bullets into Hancock. Mary dies on the table. Just as Red is about to fire the killing shot into Hancock's head, Ray slices off Red's one remaining hand. Hancock manages to get on his feet and to walk far enough away from Mary that his powers begin returning. He leaps out the hospital window and, after being rammed by a few buses and cars, he flies towards the moon. Mary's heart starts beating again. A month passes. While eating ice cream with Mary and Aaron at an amusement park, Ray gets a call from Hancock. He tells Ray to look up. Ray looks up and sees a big Allheart logo on the moon. No, but there is a scene that plays over the credits. Prior to the theatrical release it was announced that the film had to be cut in order to achieve the PG-13 rating by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). Today, two versions of the film are available. The theatrical version and an Extended Cut that offers more than 9 minutes of additional material.
