About This Game

Galaxy squad is turn-based tactical roguelike, in which you are leading a squad of mercenaries through randomly generated galaxy with different events.

The game combines node-based exploration with random events, similar to games like FTL or Renowned Explorers, with hardcore tactical battles, inspired by XCOM series. All your characters are randomly generated, and you can evolve them however you want, creating ultimate crew.

Decent Space Explorer. Galaxy Squad is the type of game that I really enjoy.

Combat uses a tactical turn-based squad system reminiscent of the XCOM series.
Outside of combat you will be managing your ship and traveling between star nodes where you will enounter events which is reminiscent of FTL.

The game is still in Early Access and thus new features are being added quite frequently and there is the occasional bug.
From my experience most bugs are fixed within a few minutes of being reported, depending on the developer's availability and the severity of the bug.
The worst bug I have enountered so far was fixed and updated to Steam within 10 minutes of being reported.. FTL meets XCOM 1. Addictive, even in this highly unfinished state.. Fun Game. Simple but not shallow. Like others have said, good smash up of FTL and X-Com.. [Switching from negative to positive just because of the developer's response, which was honestly more civil than my original, pre-edit review deserved. He's got a vision to address some of the customization deficits, and his responsiveness makes me want to give him the benefit of the doubt.]

This is a game that could be good, even great, but too many flaws bugged me.

Graphically, character models and animations are lacking. They went with... I don't know, something from the early 3D era (Playstation, 3DO, Dreamcast). There's a reason those games don't hold up well today, while many cartridge games from the prior gen still do. Environments are nice, but I just didn't like the character models at all. Maybe more outfits would help, but I really think it's something more fundamental than that.

Gameplay is promising, but frustrated. On the map, everything is slower than it needs to be. Everything you do has a cutscene and no amount of button pressings will skip them. Even picking up quests at a station is cumbersome. Combat is middle of the pack in the genre, and really hampered by the lack-luster character advancement options. Also, stun-locking is a bad mechanic. Losing an AP is one thing, but complete stun is frustrating.

Customization is weak. So far weapons and armor are just incremental improvements over each other (no armor to light armor to medium armor, each providing a +3 armor bonus and nothing else from the last upgrade. Yay...) You don't get to level up any stats, just choose 1 of a small collection of ho-hum skill perks. Ship upgrades are easily the most promising concept the game explores, but there's just not enough there to really be interesting. Don't come into this expecting FTL or Thea quality design.

I appreciate what the devs tried here, and I won't ask for a refund, but man - these guys really should have spent some time at the drawing board.
