Robert McCall is "The Equalizer", a private detective with a lot of contacts who is available for hire if you have a problem that you don't know how to solve. His no-nonsense attitude, compassion, and experience with dealing with a wide variety of situations makes him a powerful and useful detective.
Robert McCall (Woodward) is a tough-as-nails, no-BS private eye who went into business for himself after leaving the shadowy agency he once worked for. McCall works on behalf of those whose problems the police cannot - or will not - get involved in. His card reads, 'Got a problem? Odds against you? Need help? Call - The Equalizer'. Through 4 seasons, Robert McCall went up against some of the worst elements that New York City had - including gangs, mobsters, crooked cops, vigilantes, stalkers and even psychopathic stockbrokers.
I was really looking forward to seeing this when it was first broadcast on British television . I'd seen the trailers with Edward Woodward gun in hand stalking the streets of New York City . Woodward was a household name in Britain due to his starring role in CALLAN a show just before my time but regarded as one of the greatest TV shows this country had ever produced with Woodward playing a totally ruthless secret agent . So I somehow got it into my head this was going to be similar to DEATH WISH with a hired gun blowing away scumbags

I did like the theme music by Stewart Copeland but wasn't too impressed by the sub-par episode . I saw the next episode which was also sub-par and when I saw several other episodes I came to the conclusion this was a very sub-par series

There's two things wrong with it: the way it's written and the way it's played by Woodward . What happens in every episode someone gets into trouble off some mafia or home boy types , they come across a newspaper with an advert and then phone up the title hero Robert McCall who gives the victim a lecture not get involved in crime , turning up to take the criminal to jail who decides to pull a gun on McCall who then shoots the criminal in self defence . Actually this doesn't all the time because in every third episode someone's wife/daughter/girlfriend gets raped and the husband/father/boyfriend decides to take the law into his own hands and just when the vigilante is about to execute the rapist McCall turns up , gives the vigilante a lecture on the scumbag not being worth it and a speech about the rule of law which ends with the vigilante putting down his gun , the rapist pulling out his and McCall shooting the rapist in self defence

Woodward's performance in this show is strange to say the least . He is rather similar to William Shatner in that he's very wooden and very over the top at the same time and his mannerism is totally bizarre , he doesn't talk to clients he lectures them and you know when this is going to happen when McCall raises his finger " No no no - You don't need a gun - you need protection " or " You were in Nam . How old were the boys under you're command ? Right now are you telling me these eighteen year old boys were old to fight in a war that had nothing to do with them but your son isn't old enough to take responsibility for his own actions ? " It's difficult to know who's the guilty party for the show failing in its potential - The writers or the star

There is an episode that sticks in my mind because of its bizarre mentality. The episode revolves around some drunken lowlife conducting a hate campaign against a mother whose son has AIDS . The episode concludes with McCall and the mother confronting Mr drunken lowlife , McCall raises his finger and states that " He too has an incurable illness - It's an illness called alcholism " . Excuse me ! but when has guzzling booze become an illness ? And for someone to equate little children dying from AIDS to be the same as grown adults VOLUNTEERING to drink themselves to death is downright offensive Ed Woodward's portrayal of McCall is well above what the average viewer would be subject to on any given evening on any given program.

The episodes give one the sense of a short theatrical production as opposed to a half hearted, thrown together typical television program. The stories are thought out with substantial plot development. The background of the characters are nicely developed which allows the viewer to empathize with them and experience the drama fully as it unfolds.

The music, locations and the black Jaguar all contribute as well to making this series, undoubtedly, one of the best ever syndicated productions ever.

If you aren't familiar with the adventures of Robert McCall or haven't had the privilege of observing an Edward Woodward performance then get your wallet out and buy this series. I'm highly confident you won't regret doing so.

Callan was a working class former National Serviceman (a British conscripted soldier between 1945-1960) and karate expert who was blackmailed into working for the British intelligence services after being caught robbing banks. McCall was the upper class Anglo-American son of a British Intelligence officer and his American wife who worked for American Intelligence. Robert McCall was the son of a distinguished British Army officer and an American showgirl whom he was ostracized by his family after marrying. His father would later be murdered by a colleague during the Suez campaign whilst Robert McCall was at boarding school, McCall holding a lifelong resentment against his father for their detached relationship. McCall would later join The Agency/Company, a branch of American intelligence which operated both at home and abroad serving in the Malayan War, Vietnam War and the Angolan conflict as well as other Cold War battlegrounds. He is deeply disturbed by his past deeds especially collaborating with Apartheid South Africa and helping to install dictatorships in South and Central America in the fight against communism. He was briefly married and fathered a son, Scott and we later learn he also had an illegitimate daughter with a past lover. In 1985 he became disilluisioned with his profession and left to become a freelance troubleshooter/vigilante.
