Two dorky Nevada worm wranglers are kidnapped by a gang of beautiful women as part of a plot to steal plutonium from the Mafia.
Two worm farmers from Death Valley rescue a beautiful woman (Fate) after witnessing her live burial. The men (Ralph and Jason) attend to the unconscious girl but get captured by a commune of female cultists who only want to rescue their buried member. Cultist Fate had worked with a crime syndicate while uncovering a fortune in something (assumed to be platinum). But the platinum-filled suitcase gets seized by her cartel associates who then bury Fate as punishment. Ralph and Jason complete a bizarre initiation to become the only male members of this fourth-wave vampy group. Jason sees the experience as an adventure and finds romance with some of the members. Ralph only wants to escape where he is regarded as threatening and sexually repulsive. The cult leader, Hesperia now turns to avenge Fate's burial. The women, with their two new members steal back the valuable suitcase from a desert warehouse where Fate knows the syndicate holds the platinum. After the robbery, the angry mob trace the cultists back to the commune where the women escape by helicopter to the worm ranch. Ralph is left behind and captured while hiding the suitcase. Imprisoned in the warehouse, Ralph spots a time bomb that he had handled during his warehouse break-in earlier. Bound, he can still arm the bomb before being forced to a torture room. During the interrogation and at the moment he is to die, Ralph drops behind a desk and survives the explosion that he had set five minutes earlier. Ralph phones the bug ranch where Fate answers his call. Racing to Ralph at the burning warehouse, Fate asks about the hidden valise at the commune. Receiving her answers from shell-shocked Ralph, Fate shoots the rancher and drives to the commune where she finds what's really inside the priceless suitcase. Ralph is saved from death again by his flak-vest that he still wears from the earlier mob attack as he fumbles back to his ranch. Cult leader Hesperia has left on her helicopter alone after dumping all of the hapless cult with Ralph and Jason. Next day, Ralph has the confused women working as worm wranglers on his ranch. Later he and Jason see two men burying something over the horizon, just as in the beginning when they saw Fate's burial. The coffin this time is an oil drum filled with nuclear waste from a new nearby nuke plant. The consequences of the contaminated dump and Fate's surprise has catastrophic effects on Ralph and the cultists over the next moments.
This thoroughly uncategorizable whatever-the-hell-it-is is far and away one of the most aberrant gonzo visions ever committed to celluloid(with a few shot-on-video nudity inserts). Seriously...this one will leave your head spinning for days, if not months...

The conspectus of this flippantly engendered zero-budget wonder involves a rat-pack of female criminals who abduct a couple of lowly Death Valley bug farmers(!), and forcibly enlist their aid in a plot to snare a suitcase full of plutoni...uh...PLATINUM... from a rival organized crime syndicate. The film brings down the curtain with a scene paying light homage to the 50s noir classic KISS ME DEADLY.

The deranged impetus of RUNAWAY NIGHTMARE is largely propelled by dallying shots of women posing seductively with an assortment of weapons. Considering the noticeably unfurnished nature of this conception, I suspect it was predominantly formulated as fetishistic fodder piloted at guys with a blaze in their pants for armed-and-dangerous females. Hey...sign me up. What's hotter than a chick with a gun?

Nothing...I mean NOTHING the likes of RUNAWAY NIGHTMARE has ever crossed my path...an ass-backward oddity with enough catawampus appeal to merit a small cult following. Featured castmember Georgia Durante, a noted model, gangster's moll and stuntwoman, later published her disturbing memoirs in a marvelous book(called THE COMPANY SHE KEEPS), which is every bit as bizarre as this film. Ralph (writer / director / star Mike Cartel) and Jason (Al Valletta) are two dopey worm farmers in Death Valley. One day they witness the burial of a young woman - who wasn't dead - and by rescuing her, they leave themselves vulnerable to the machinations of a female cult. The ladies in this cult are lovely and deadly, and their great plan - other than turning Ralph and Jason into sex slaves - is to pilfer a case of platinum from the Mafia.

"Runaway Nightmare" is not going to be for people who prefer lots of action and explosions every few minutes. It's a very sedately paced and quirky little oddity. Cartel is much more concerned with surrealism and nuance than in delivering anything resembling a conventional narrative. His film isn't altogether satisfying, and some people may find it tough to stick with. The acting is obviously going to be of the amateur variety, yet Cartel himself has an enjoyably deadpan manner and gets to utter some funny lines. He and Valletta do make for an amusing pair of buddies. Among our striking female antagonists are Seeska Vandenberg, and Cindy Donlan as the memorably named Hesperia.

On location shooting is a big plus; Cartel gives "Runaway Nightmare" some interesting atmosphere. Melding genres such as horror, crime, and exploitation, it's basically for the more adventuresome of lovers of cult and forgotten cinema. Some buffs might get a big kick out of the ending, which pays tribute to a particular film noir classic. Cartel maintains a very low key approach even in those sequences that would ordinarily be treated as major set pieces. This is also mildly titillating but never overtly trashy.

The original 1982 VHS release had mismatched B & W video inserts of bare-breasted, torso-framed models spliced into the film. All this was done by a second party distributor without the knowledge of filmmaker Michael Cartel. New DVD and Blu-ray (and 35mm positive print) formats from the 1981 negative began production in mid-2013, and do not include the counter-sexy nudie grotesques. Platinum Bombshell is the title name first registered with WGA/West in 1978 for the shooting script later known as Runaway Nightmare. All of the camera reports and movie slates during the first week of shooting bear the Platinum Bombshell title. Director Mike Cartel said the Platinum name was never intended to be the release title since it was too closely associated with actress Jean Harlow. The Runaway Nightmare name was invented by Cartel during the second week of filming and refers more to the making of the film.
