In the year 2010, the first manned mission to Mars returns to earth. During re-entry, something goes horribly wrong, and the craft explodes, scattering debriss on the earth below. Shortley afterwards, seemingly related to the loss of the Mars mission, strange creatures dubbed 'Ancients' begin to attack the earth. An agency called AAST is formed to fight them, deploying a crack team of all-female specialists in swordplay, firearms, and intelligence. But the key to defeating the Ancients is not these skilled operatives, but Takeru, an inexperienced high-school boy who is the only person capable of wearing the mysterious MARS power suit, the only weapon that can go toe-to-toe with the Ancients in combat. Forced by his father to wear the MARS suit, Takeru is thrown into a deadly battle for the earth.
As you can guess from the rating this OVA has on just about any site where you can rate stuff, Mars of Destruction (or Hametsu No Mars) is bad and it gets just about anything wrong that an animated movie (no matter the length) can.

Story - The story starts out with two astronauts talking about getting wasted while on the mission and subsequently get blown up. Flash forward to people who are supposedly part of an elite team to defend earth (even though it's questionable whether they're in high school yet by the looks of them) fighting some aliens (which mostly involves pointing their guns at them and not shooting). I'm not sure if anything from here on out could be considered a spoiler but I'm not taking the risk. The story makes no sense whatsoever and the out-of-nowhere plot twist doesn't help it. Character development is non-existent with the exception of one small scene that shows that the main(?) character has problems with his father. As a consequence, there isn't the slightest reason to be emotionally involved or even remotely care about anything that happens Bottom line, there isn't the slightest bit of value in this story, no originality, no ideas and the execution is below poor.

Animation - Taking a glance at a screen shot of this might make you think "eh, this is all right for a low budget 90s production". However, for something released in 2005, the visuals are unacceptable. Nevermind the boring art style or the emptiness of the world. What makes the animation unacceptable is the stunning lack of, well, animation. Hardly anyone ever bothers moving, the fighters spend more time just looking at the enemies than actually firing guns. the main villain never does more then grab someone and holding them up in the air for a couple of seconds. It's almost unbearably boring to watch and makes you wonder why you're looking at it at all.

Sound - While the voice work adds up for the most part, the sound department definitely doesn't get a pass either. Sound effects are dull and do little to nothing to draw you into the scene and the absolute absence of any sounds at all during most scenes may go along with the visuals but that doesn't make the whole thing any less boring. The biggest joke however is the music. It's not bad, no. In fact, it includes some of the most memorable pieces of music ever written but they're all sub par versions of classical music pieces and don't even remotely match anything that is going on. It's laughable at best.

All in all, Mars of Destruction offers nothing. It's about as dull and irrelevant as animation can get. it's not even funny either unless you have someone to make funny remarks about it with. If you look at how much emotion, creativity and entertainment film makers have been able to show in 20 minutes, it could almost make you angry at how little this OVA seems to care but trust me, it's not worth it. I can honestly only recommend it so you can appreciate whatever other productions give you (or even try to give). It's rather interesting how a story like this actually came out because of just how deep the show is. (Angel: "WAIT A MINUTE! Your not taking this serious, are you? Your first review and this is what your going for?: Kurai: "Hold on a second! Just hear me out!" Angel: "I hope you know what your doing….") As I was saying, the story is rather deep for it begs the question on if our lives, just how much time do we commit to watching shows like this. The plot brings to light that we don't need names of characters or an actual storyline that leads somewhere in order to be made, we just have to have the budget to make it.

The animation is rather exceptional, for something that might have been created during the 50s. (Angel: "To bad it came out in 2005.) The artwork is clear and vibrant with bright colors and amazing fluid movement. (Akuma: "For someone who has robotic hinges in their body." Angel: "And bright colors that seem to mud together.") I was extremely fond of how the girls looked so different from each other, just like they were twins! I commend how life-life the fighting was including the time one of the girls heads popped like a balloon from one of the little lasers the Ancients did. (Angel: "It sounded like a balloon popping too if I recall.") The blue power suit that the guy wears looks really original, about as original as a toothpick in a box of toothpicks. I just wonder how the guy actually fights with a suit that seems to squeeze his internal organs like a corset though. I heard of women who can't breath in those things. It would take great skill to fight in one. (Angel: "Want to try it?" Kurai: "Um… no thank you. Lets get back to the review.") In some areas, I commend the artists for putting scenes that looked like they were supposed to be upside down rather then right side up.

Each girl had pretty realistic voices depicting how brave they were, working hard in making them sound as though they were actually bored instead, except when they are screaming every 2 seconds. It's also interesting how we had to have a doctor actually check to see if one girl was alive even after her head had been gone. (Akuma: "Interesting also is how the girls pretty much looked like they were hopeful that their friend would pull through.") It was also really cool that they explained the AAST about 7 minutes into the show, it stands for the Anti-unidentified Ancients Special Team. (Angel: "So when they do identify them, they will have to rename their team.") Sometimes the girls would actually do rather well mimicking another girls voice to the point that I feel they were actually using the same voice actor once in a while.
