A man is chopped in half, and the lab tries to tie the case to a Japanese mobster, who seeks custody of his biological son, who was adopted by the victim. Meanwhile, Natalia's hearing loss nearly makes her a victim during the investigation.
When a man is killed by a Japanese katana sword, the investigation leads them to the Japanese mob. They discover that the murdered man has an adopted son who is Japanese. They learn that he is the son of the head of the Japanese mob. The man wants his son. Later someone tries to grab him, it's his mother who gave him to the man who adopted him to protect him from his biological father. Horatio also runs into his former partner who works for the mobster. He eventually learns there's a lot more to his desire to get his son.
Did you know that a samurai sword can cut you in two, horizontally or vertically, meaning it can slice through bone just as well as flesh? Pretty gruesome stuff, as a lot of WWII prisoners of war can tell you who survived Bataan. Anyway, here we see it when a man is sliced at the waist, becoming two half-people at once and dying on the spot in a lot of blood.

The who, what, why, etc., traces back to the dead's man son who is adopted and the real parents who...uh...well, let's just say they are all involved in here, as well as a few others.

Meanwhile, we have the continuing saga of "Natalie Boa Vista" and her hearing problem. We are left with questions so it's obvious the writers are going to stretch this sub-plot story out all season.
