This movie starts with a cracking sequence set in Mexico showing how a little girl escapes from a gang of thugs and runs away to find her uncle in the USA. It totally gripped me - seemed like this was going to be a clever, fast paced action movie full of interesting characters and visuals.

Well I'm sad to say I was disappointed. It was certainly fast-paced but otherwise it never lived up to those initial expectations. Zoe Saldana plays a character on a revenge hunt to find and kill those who murdered her parents, and OK she puts in a decent performance but her character is completely one-dimensional. She just goes around killing without seemingly encountering a single moral dilemma or coming under any real threat herself.

What doesn't help is that none of the other characters are particularly interesting either. She has an uncle who tries to help her and a lover who is just totally clueless. The leader of the Mexican gang who is Saldana's arch-enemy barely appears until the very end and isn't up to much even then.

A shame - but by the end I was clock-watching waiting for the movie to finish. The movie had nice potential to be a good and entertaining action flick. Story line was decent and writing well done. BUT, here it comes, all, and I mean all, the actors had dead voices. Everyone in this movie sounded bored or retarded...I doubt the actors are to blame, because I have seen some of them in other movies. And using the word retarded is no rhetoric on my part, a few of them actually sounded very dim while delivering their lines.

Summary; A good action movie which was run down by "dead voices". If you like actors who know how to portray little emotion (in fact have little) it's your kind of movie.

Maybe it was done on purpose. Maybe the director thought that killers, gangsters, federal agents and the like talked in dead boring voices all the time, because of the terrible hardships of their profession. I am certainly not an expert on that subject. The jittery aesthetic is a bit grating - there's a three-cut minimum per roundhouse kick - but the spectacularly named Olivier Megaton (Transporter 3) still manages to deliver the action-film goods.
"The Fade Out Line" by Phoeboe Killdeer & The Short Straws. There are three versions: the U.S. theatrical, the international, and an unrated cut targeted for so-called home theater use in the States. The US theatrical version is most censored to obtain its PG-13 rating (for violence, disturbing images, intense sequences of action, sexuality and brief strong language). It has not been made available for home cinema use. Beside it's US theatrical release, the PG-13 version is only available as rental DVD in the USA or as Video on Demand. It has been heavily censored from its original version.

The European theatrical version was longer, leaving some intensive scenes. The Unrated version is approximately four minutes longer than the international version and features some extended action and story sequences.
