Christopher Columbus believes he can find an alternative route to the far East and persuades the King and Queen of Spain to finance his expedition. But the Sultan of Turkey, who makes a great deal of money through taxing the merchants who have to pass through his country on the current route, sends his best spy, Fatima, to wreck the trip.
Some movies can be so bad that they are funny. The trouble with this movie is that it tries desperately to be funny but isn't. Many looked forward to seeing a new Carry on movie but despite a very good and talented cast this movie is very hard to sit through. Its hard to say why it doesn't work but its probably because the genre has out lived its used by date. The old carry on movies had a loyal and faithful audience but they belonged to another time. These days we can watch them and they bring back sweet memories of sitting in an old theatre (like the Grosovenor in Melbourne)and licking on your Dixi ice cream. It is rather nice that the gay characters don't do the silly hinting and that Julian Clary can be quite open. He seems to be the only performer who seems to get a laugh. Thankfully most people support gay rights and same sex relationships are simply a life style choice. "Carry on Columbus" really is a terrible mess and there are no laughs.
The last film with the Carry On imprimatur in the title from the United Kingdom was not as bad as a lot would have you believe. But Carry On Columbus which came out in 1992 suffered from the fact that very few of the players who graced the series back in its salad years are in this cast. You long for the presence of Kenneth Williams, Sid James, Kenneth Connor and Charles Hawtrey. But by 1992 three of those four were no longer with us and seeing this you can't help wish they were.

Jim Dale who plays Christopher Columbus was the only one in the cast who had Carry On experience to an appreciable degree. Jon Pertwee who did a few of the films in small roles was also in the cast, but a whole new generation of comics and comic players from Great Britain and America grace this cast. The funniest is Julian Clary who plays the morale officer on the Santa Maria and is one of the campiest characters you'll ever want to meet.

Poor Columbus, as in history he has this idea about sailing west to find a new route to the Orient and the trade there. But in Carry On Columbus Dale and others have to contend with the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire who gets his cut coming and going through his domain. A new sea route to the Orient would deprive him of considerable revenue, so he's got agents to stop Columbus. And what agents they are.

It's not a bad film, but below the standards set by the Carry On regulars in their hay day.
