BlackEye looks fantastic, loads nice and snappy, it's chepa, and offers a challenge. Those are the good things.
As for the bad - the game is entirely too chaotic. You essentially fall down each level avoiding various enemies, traps, and other environmental hazards. The controls (I used an Xbox One controller) didn't feel terribly responsive or at least not to a point I'd prefer. My biggest gripe is I simply have no idea what's going on. I don't mean story-wise either, though that's lacking in-game too. Instead I'm talking about the various icons or artifacts you can pick up. I had no clue what the vast majority of it did or how to use them correctly. Instead I found myself just bumbling to the bottom of each level, occasionally shooting something out of my rear, going through some random portals and hoping I make it to the end.
I realize this is a pretty negative review of this game and I can't really recommend it right now. However, it does seem as if the developer is working hard on it and adding not only new content but trying to fix existing issues. I'd gladly come back and try this title out again and see if it's been improved. So there's definitely potential - just right now it's not fully reached.
Me bumbling around: https://youtu.be/jcMmx_GRzkg. I'd recommend this game based on it's price and that it is 'proof of concept'.
I've got countless games like this, as in, games you play quickly for five/ten mins at a time whilst waiting for other things...and, To be fair to the game, it is surprisingly fun to play in it's current state.
It's like a 2D platformer, well it is. But the initial few levels have you fighting your way downwards as it introduces various enemies and the mechanics of the game, this is something I haven't seen as of recent, and is kind of nice. I find that the pace of the game is killed from the offset though due to the way you have to fight through things and this is a bit of a shame, this could easily have been part of the design though. If that is the case, then it is unusual to see a platformer where you have to take your time!
I've made a quick intro to the game video to help people who may be on the fence about buying it or not.
https://youtu.be/4w1UtgUBaTU
A final note; The art style makes it hard to identify some enemies, but again, I'm not sure if this was part of the design or if this will be addressed at any point in the development.
On the whole, for £2 or so I don't think I can really complain. It has potential for varied and interesting levels and game development, as well as this it runs quickly and smoothly, allowing me to easily use it to kill ten mins here and there etc.
5/7. I'd recommend this game based on it's price and that it is 'proof of concept'.
