About This Software

What is it?

Arcane Mapper is a mapping tool designed for Digital or Virtual Tabletops and printing for physical play. Put together high quality maps for D&D, Pathfinder, GURPS, Hero or any other Pencil and Paper RPG system - whether on the table top or virtual. It features a simple to use interface for drawing out rooms, adding objects and adding atmosphere with high quality lighting. Ideal for dungeons and interiors with support for outdoor environments coming before the full release.

What is the idea?

Arcane Mapper is an easy to use tool for creating maps for roleplaying games. The tool can produce top down, forced perspective 3D looking environments that mesh well with simple images for objects - no modeling or 3D experience required. With free assets available for private use on the internet, this software allows you to put together high quality maps for your games with less effort, without constraining you to predefined map pieces, tiles or limited assets. Easily render out high quality images for Virtual Tabletop games or print out maps for a physical tabletop game. Even save out .PSD files that preserve the layers for Photoshop if you are more artistically inclined.

Longer term after the initial release, I am planning on adding Digital Desktop and possibly Virtual Desktop features with high quality real time lighting and fog of war with an easy to use interface for GMs and players.

What editing and mapping features does the software support?

  • Easy to use interface for adding objects to your maps, scaling, moving, rotating and placing them rapidly. Supports a full set of configurable hot keys.
  • Full undo and redo support.
  • Layers to organize objects and environments with the ability to decide which layers cast shadows and are affected by lighting.
  • Draw arbitrarily shaped rooms and easily connect them together. Each room can have its own settings, textures and look.
  • Draw pits, lowered sections, stairs and raised platforms right into your rooms.
  • Procedural liquids to fill your pits and help you create sewers and water ways.
  • Procedural details such as dirt, mold and spider webs.
  • High quality lighting with soft shadows, any object can be a light and any object can cast shadows.
  • High quality ambient occlusion to ground your objects in the map.
  • Seamless exterior and interior maps with layers to support roofs.
  • Multiple maps in one - see maps below the current map with fading or fogging - to give large buildings and dungeons a sense of depth.

What about Mac and Linux?

Love it!
It's really easy to do your own Dungeon map for your next Pen&Paper Round.
It might take a while editing and Inporting all the Pictures you want. But if you have everything you need, its very easy and very fast. All i need now is some picture editing programm.

Issues:
-You cant drag items back. The item will get struck. if you want to remove it just select it and press DEL.
-If you Drag room corners you cant put them back. if you want to have them back where you took them, you HAVE to press Strg-z (and even that command kinda doesnt work, i have to click it at the top. but maybe its just my European qwert keyboard. so maybe strg-y works.
-It's kinda Impossible to do Ring Rooms
-I can't edit tags. like adding or removing them or change their names or something like that. also i couldnt find the tag-search, so i simple click a tag and it filters all items based on the clicked tag(s). Looking forward to the updates to come. Huge potential for this program!. I am requesting a refund. This is WAY to buggy, even for an open beta launch. The first dungeon I attempted to create was riddled with problems. There's no bridge support, there's lighting hiccups, missing textures, and a hell of a lot of stuff that was promised that doesn't work. I am appalled at what the devs believed to be okay to show the public. I may purchase again when this is a FUNCTIONING PRODUCT.. Developer is gone; Project is dead. There are better options out there. Too bad, I was really excited for this and was really spreading the word to my tRPG friends.. Well, I have been waiting for it for quite a while now and it's finally here. But just as my excitement was, was also my dissapointment when I read the negative reviews. I got scared that my game will freeze or crash everytime I try to get something decent. or that some functions may not work at all - but I worried for nothing.

The program is working fine, didnt crash or freeze even after 60 minutes straight.
Yes, the game needs some polishing but afterall I am absolutely happy with it.
There is one thing that bothers me tho, the changing of the texture for the wall+floor doesnt work properly for me(I can change it, but it takes more time than it should), but I am sure that this will be fixed soon.
But hey, it's early access after all.

I created my first couple of dungeons and me + my players are absolutely satisfied with the outcome.

May the force be with you.. Epic! just one thing is there a way to delete a texture that was added with out reinstalling the program (that ws the only solution i could find)?

The program offers everything it suggests in the videos, and should do so for both Nvidia and AMD cards now. The developer has been very willing to work with his customers to make this tool more accessible from the start.

My prior review had detailed a few bugs that are no longer present, and a few misconceptions that have since been answered. (rather quickly, too!) While the program is still fairly simple, this only gives it a starting point to grow in a ton of directions that I can't wait to see.

If you're new to GMing tabletops, this is a great tool work with; No need to learn layer masking or any other image editing software unless you want post editing. You can simply draw your map, choose your textures dynamically (meaning no constant editing to see how different walls and floors work together), and then light it up. It's all very hands on, and doesn't feel overwhelming or technical, despite the power it gives you. No more drawing boxes in MS Paint. Get that♥♥♥♥♥♥outta here.

Now, as it currently stands, most WILL want to work with their maps they export from here in post, if they want things like texture fading between floors,outdoor elements, etc. But, again, this is clearly a work in progress that I can only imagine the dev(s) are working feverishly to further.

Should you pick it up? If you're new to mapmaking, definitely. If you've been doing it for a while and already have a grasp on image manipulation, probably not YET, but if you want a quick way to get a clean, easy-to-work-with base for more complex maps, this is it. I've been GMing tabletops for over a decade and this has already been helpful in making quick maps on the fly.. Updated Review

Well, it appears that the developer has abandoned this product. At this time I can no longer recommend anyone sink any money into this product until after it comes out of early access. Which is something I do not believe will ever happen.

I'm giving Arcane Mapper a thumbs up for now because I think it has a lot of potential and will be a great way to quickly throw a map together.

But for now, it's really not quite there. It regularly freezes up and glitches while drawing walls, making it nearly impossible to complete a map without something going wrong.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the updates go in the next few weeks.. Abandoned Software, only purchase if you are satisfied as is with the product
