Almost Human is an action-packed police drama set 35 years in the future, when police officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. The year is 2048. Meet John Kennex a cop who survived one of the most catastrophic attacks ever made against the police department. After waking up from a 17-month coma, he can't remember much - except that his partner was killed; his girlfriend, Anna Moore, left him after the attack; and he lost one of his legs and is now outfitted with a highly sophisticated synthetic appendage. Suffering from depression, mental atrophy, trauma-onset OCD, PTSD and the "psychological rejection of his synthetic body part," John returns to work at the behest of longtime ally Captain Sandra Maldonado. By mandate, every cop must partner with a robot. And despite his passionate aversion to androids, John is paired up with a battle-ready MX-43. But he abruptly terminates his partnership after the robot discovers incriminating information about him. So technician Rudy Lom introduces John to Dorian, a discontinued android with unexpected emotional responses. Although such responses were deemed flaws, it is in these "flaws" that John relates to Dorian most. After all, John is part-machine now, and Dorian is part-human. John and Dorian's understanding of each other not only complements them, it connects them. As he adjusts to working with his new partner, John also must learn to get along with his new colleagues, including the eager and somewhat starstruck Detective Valerie Stahl and the distrustful Detective Richard Paul, who does not welcome John back with open arms. Almost Human will follow the week-to-week missions of John and Dorian, as they fight crime across this futuristic landscape, while the mysteries surrounding his attack and the larger mythology of this new world unfold.

I was highly sceptical to this TV-show. After all it's a difficult genre to succeed in. I'm not a fan of Karl Urban, nor am I a fan of Michael Ealy, so both of those two were big ? for me. But I was very surprised when not only had the show a really good setting in the future, but also Urban has up:ed his game a lot since I last saw him. I have to be honest about Michael Ealy, haven't seen much of him, but he's really decent.

As I said the setting done quite well, they've pulled of the future concept really good. The script is a bit cheesy, a bit "uuh" sometimes, but in general it is decent and does it's job. The show overall is exciting, and they've managed to introduce us to the season's story. However it's to early to say anything about that.

The main characters seem they're really good. It's nice to see Urban's character development and his relationship with his synthetic(robot) partner. Though beyond the two main characters I haven't really gotten to know anyone else. There's the stereotypical office douche, the pretty face but zero character woman and so on. Hopefully it'll evolve into something more.

As a fan of Fringe, which this show does remind me of, I'm very glad that this has been made. It also has received good reviews from most parts. Cop dramas have long been a staple of network television. Since the 1970s, there has been a non-stop variety of police procedurals that have flooded the networks with varying degrees of success. The best of these, such as "NYPD Blue", have offered either something new in terms of edge or thematic material. The worst of these, which can be seen on television just about any night of the week right now, simply offers generic storytelling and static character development. "Almost Human", the new show created by from J.H. Wyman and produced by JJ Abrams, offers a fresh perspective on the cop drama: one that takes place in the future. While this may not be an entirely original concept for a cop drama (the "Alien Nation" series comes to mind), the presentation and production design helps the show feel like more than just a run-of-the-mill procedural. Only a few episodes into its first season, "Almost Human" is growing with potential and becoming smarter as it goes along. There are some tired cop clichés, such as the detective with the loved one who disappeared under mysterious circumstances, but these are far fewer than one might expect from watching the promotional materials for the show. So far, the series has been helped tremendously by the fact that both Karl Urban and Michael Ealy have a fair amount of chemistry and avoid over-acting. The comical buddy cop-style banter between the two actors is easily the best part of every episode so far, even if it does occasionally border on being too cute. It's a testament to J.H. Wyman and the creative team that the overall tone is as steady as it is. Despite the potentially goofy premise, "Almost Human" isn't silly or over-the-top nor is overly dark or dreary. Similarly, there is a distinct stylistic look to the series that is futuristic without being too flashy. Each episode is well shot and relatively fast-paced with action scenes that are brief but effective. The only real problem the show faces going forward is where it goes from here. Whether "Almost Human" becomes one of the better shows on television will depend entirely on whether it's able to continue to avoid more clichés and stale procedural case-of-the-week traps. A strictly procedural version of "Almost Human" still might be watchable with such a great cast in place, but J.H. Wyman and the writers seem to be capable of turning the show into something special and unique given time. 7/10
