Does the food industry need ISO 9001?  

 

Now a day's everyone is giving important to ISO Certrtifications because they want to expand their business. If any one company is giving to ISO certifications they will definitely want to grow more in their business. Because now a day's people are looking for a branded product along with whatever they are. Now a day's majority of companies are looking to take ISO Certifications to their companies or industries.

IS this ISO 9001 certification is necessary to Food industry ??? It is a big question ???? Each and every one should have time to think now.

Food companies are asking:

• Why do we need ISO 9001?
• Does not FSSC 22000 replace ISO 9001 in the food industry?
• Why do I need to maintain two certifications?

 

Now while I fully appreciate the costs of certification, there is a fundamental issue we are all failing to see.

FSSC 22000 or even ISO 22000 for that matter is a FOOD SAFETY management system standard. ISO 9001 is a QUALITY management system standard. FSSC 22000 does not address the word quality and ISO 9001 does not address the word food safety (although it could be extrapolate customer requirements for food product to include food safety).

 

The following steps illustrate the need for both systems in a food company.

 

1. When tested with other GFSI FOOD SAFETY standards, ISO 22000 Certification in Hyderabad  must be audited with ISO 22002-1 PRP's to gain equivalence to the minimum food safety requirements. FSSC so have ISOFS address.

 

2. Other GFSI benchmarked food safety standards include within the scope of the standard, mandatory food quality management requirements. In FSSC 22000Q which is a voluntary module. This voluntary module requires a quality management system that meets all the requirements of ISO 9001.

 

3. Thus, the importance of quality management in the food industry does not matter? So, what are the proportions of complaints you receive - quality or food safety? Your answer should again underline the importance of quality management.

 

 Does that mean food safety is not important?

 

Not at all! It is the main component of a food product, but it is the quality of your product and service that will win you customers. Food safety levels the playing fields!

 

So at I advocating two systems?

I am suggesting you to implement a robust food safety and quality management system - do you need two certificates? Well that depends on your internal disciplines and customer requirements. A certificate does not guarantee effective system is maintained on a straight and narrow basis.
